"Internet Explorer still retains a majority of the desktop browser market share, at 52.63 percent, a substantial 1.76 point drop from September. However, desktop browsing makes up only about 94 percent of Web traffic; the rest comes from phones and tablets, both markets in which Internet Explorer is all but unrepresented. As a share of the whole browser market, Internet Explorer has only 49.58 percent of users. Microsoft's browser first achieved a majority share in—depending on which numbers you look at—1998 or 1999. It reached its peak of about 95 percent share in 2004, and has been declining ever since."

"After a couple of weeks on tinkering with the newly released Internet Explorer (IE) 9, and a host of other Web browsers, I have to say that while 32-bit IE 9 is much better than any other version of IE to date, it’s still not my first pick for a Web browser. Here’s why."

"According to Net Applications’ figures for November 2010,  Internet Explorer’s share of the market has declined another five percent to 58.44 percent in November, compared to about 63.62 percent during the same month last year.  In mid 2008, IE held a commanding lead of 75 percent market share.*"

"If you are going to create a new browser from scratch and go up against the Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Apple, you might as well make it really different. RockMelt, a company backed by Netscape founder Marc Andreessen which has been under wraps until today, is trying to build a new browsing experience from the ground up. Are they crazy? “The big thing,” says Andreessen, “is that the browser world is very much in flux right now.”"

"When I started working on this article, my goal was to unravel the bookmark sync APIs so that I could start making my own client applications and possibly roll my own custom cross-browser solution to fill the need left by Xmarks. What I discovered is that such an undertaking isn't really within the realm of weekend projects at this point. The APIs just aren't there yet. It's important to remember that both the Chrome and Firefox synchronization services are still under development and will likely be more supportive of interoperability in the future as they mature."

"Google developers have announced that Chromium, the open source browser on which the company builds the Chrome browser, is getting a GPU graphics overhaul. The development has been driven by the work on developing WebGL and 3D CSS transform support."

"The Firefox community also has another reason to celebrate. On Thursday, Firefox add-on downloads crossed the 2 billion marker, further emphasising the popularity of the browser and its extensions."

"The browser wars are as heated as it’s ever been, but Firefox is still the number one ‘alternative’ browser out there with a significant market share. But getting people to use Firefox is one thing, getting companies to do it is quite another. With plenty of other companies still relying on Internet Explorer 6, IBM has taken a bold move, for a company its size, and is now switching to Firefox as the preferred default browser for its employees. "

"A recent change to IBM's internal IT policy has made Firefox the company's default Web browser. The move is a major endorsement of the browser's suitability in large-scale enterprise environments. IBM plans to roll it out to employees on new computers and will encourage its staff of 400,000 to use it on their existing systems."

"Will IBM start a trend? They're certainly an influential company, and one which a lot of other companies -- tech and otherwise -- look to for advice and guidance. IBM's browser action speaks loudly, and there's every chance their example will be followed."

"IBM has standardized on the Mozilla Firefox web browser as the default browser for its employees. Big Blue says the Firefox browser is standards-compliant, enterprise-ready and provides an on ramp to cloud computing."

"Google's Chrome Web browser continued its upward march through May, cracking the 7 percent mark, according to Net Applications. Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser continued to fall, hitting 59.7 percent after falling below 60 percent through April. Mozilla Firefox stood at 24.35 percent, down from 24.59 percent. Apple's Safari browser nudged up a tad to 4.77 percent from 4.72 percent for May. If Chrome grows a full percentage point every two months, it will crack 10 percent market share by Dec. 1."

"In spite of its weak security, poor performance, and woeful standards compliance, a lot of people are still using Internet Explorer 6 as their Web browser of choice. A large part of this user base seems to be made up of corporate users. According to Stuart Strathdee, Chief Security Adviser at Microsoft Australia, one of the reasons for this continued usage is that companies have found a virtue in one of the browser's biggest flaws: it doesn't work properly with social networking sites like Facebook."

"For the first time in years, energy and resources are being poured into browsers, the ubiquitous programs for accessing content on the Web. Credit for this trend—a boon to consumers—goes to two parties. The first is Google (GOOG), whose big plans for the Chrome browser have shaken Microsoft out of its competitive torpor and forced the software giant to pay fresh attention to its own browser, Internet Explorer. Microsoft all but ceased efforts to enhance IE after it triumphed in the last browser war, sending Netscape to its doom. Now it's back in gear."

"Viewer 2.0 is far more organized than before, and that makes it easier to use. It brings the most important functions to the surface, while less frequently used tools are hidden in menus, available when needed but not jumping out to confuse the beginner.

The top of the viewer now looks like a Web browser, with an address bar that contains the 3D coordinates of your avatar's location, in a form resembling a URL. As with a Web browser, you can embed bookmarks ("landmarks" in Second Life jargon), in the horizontal space below the address bar."

"Now, the author is quick to point out the caveats of the graph (and does so for four paragraphs), and notes that he was hesitant to even publish it because of how easy it is to misinterpret. The graph, while it shows commits, doesn't weigh more important ones versus less important ones. Nor does it in any way measure the ways in which companies or individuals contribute to WebKit in other meaningful ways. That said, it does clearly show that in late 2009, Google surpassed Apple as the company that now contributes the most (again, in terms of commits) to the project."

"Despite the rise of open source within the federal government, Mozilla's Firefox has yet to gain an official nod from the Department of State, at least according to a recent question-and-answer session that Secretary Hillary Clinton and Under Secretary Patrick Kennedy hosted last week, with an ironic back-and-forth on Firefox kicked off by government employee Jim Finkle"
