Tectonic » ‘The era of closed formats is dead’

"The South African e-documentation workgroup is hosting a number of the world’s most influential XML and open standards activists at the “XML in Government Workshop” next week. One of the key figures behind the event - and indeed behind much of the XML and digital standards work in South Africa - is Bob Jolliffe. A member of the South African department of science and technology, a founder of Freedom to Innovate South Africa (FTISA), and someone who has spent the best part of the past year arguing the merits and demerits of OOXML, he explains here how far the movement to open standards and XML in government has progressed."

SEC to Propose XBRL Mandate

"The Securities and Exchange Commission voted May 14 to formally propose requiring U.S. public companies to file their financial reports using Extensible Business Reporting Language. XBRL tags uniquely identify individual items in a company's financial statement. Formatting financial documents with XBRL allow the data to be easily searched on the Internet, downloaded into spreadsheets, reorganized in databases and put to any number of other comparative and analytical uses. An international nonprofit consortium of approximately 450 major companies, organizations and government agencies is developing the open-source, royalty-free language."
