Red Hat: 'We spend over $100 million a year to advance Linux' | The Open Road - CNET News

"I used to complain that the Web companies pick and choose where to contribute back, but it all seems to work out in the end. Yahoo works on Hadoop while Red Hat releases KVM while Google releases Gears while...you get the picture. Different companies releasing and "free-riding" on different open-source code, with the entire industry growing and benefiting in the process."

Google Open Sources Heart and Soul of Google Wave Code

Google July 24 said it released to open source the OT (Operational Transform) code, the framework that enables multiple people to edit a single document in real time across a wide-area network, as well as a basic client/server prototype that uses the wave protocol. Google Wave programmers issued the code under an Apache 2.0 license during an event hosted for 150 developers who desired a deeper dive into the software and possibly even to pony up code for the Google Wave Federation Protocol.

The company has aimed the software at netbooks and smartphones in a bid to spur demand for its Atom mobile device chip."

Microsoft gets out of the way of Bing | The Open Road - CNET News

"Microsoft has a great brand, but it also has a brand that carries a lot of baggage with it, baggage that its search service (or "decision engine," as it describes Bing) really doesn't need. One of the great failings of Microsoft's past search efforts is that Microsoft tried to tie them into the larger Microsoft experience which, it turned out, wasn't helpful. Microsoft's brand is tied up in the desktop. Search is all about the Web."

Is Google App Engine successful? | The Wisdom of Clouds - CNET News

"So, all of this might lead you to believe I'm anti-App Engine, or at least not confident that it is important except as a PaaS example. And until yesterday, you would be right. However, I spent the day yesterday at the Cloud Connect conference, hosted at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. Google was much more visible here (in part because they were a "platinum sponsor"), and perhaps more importantly, the "how to" sessions they hosted Wednesday afternoon were packed by interested developers and technologists."
