Why did Microsoft really release open-source code?
"Regardless of whether Microsoft did violate the GPL, or whether it did release the code to avoid a lawsuit, Microsoft should have been more forthright in its announcement and told the whole story, Cherry said. He said the move "casts doubt" on Microsoft's motives in the open-source arena. Perhaps it casts doubt on Microsoft's credibility in general.
New guide from SLFC: Not violating the GPL for dummies
"The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) has published a guide that explains the obligations imposed by GNU's General Public License (GPL). The SFLC, which has recently conducted a string of GPL enforcement lawsuits, released the guide in order to educate companies and help them understand what they need to do in order to comply with the license and avoid legal risks."
