Watson must've blown through his winnings. He's getting a job:

"IBM plans to sell Watson as a cloud-based service companies can tap to find answers in disparate data sets. For example, a financial services firm could use it to sift through news reports and market research to find likely acquisition targets. Or a healthcare company could utilize Watson to process medical articles, prior cases and even a patient's own medical history and identify the most likely diagnosis and best course of treatment."

"I.B.M.’s Strategic Intellectual Property Insight Platform. Clearly, the Watson branding team didn’t work on this name.

But then again, this isn’t for television, where Watson performed. It is for major corporate customers, seeking competitive advantage. The technology, sold as a cloud-based service, is the result of several years of joint development between IBM Research and four companies — AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, DuPont and Pfizer.

The insight platform uses data mining, natural-language processing and analytics to pore through millions of patent filings and biomedical journals to look for chemical compounds used in drug discovery."

I'll always have COBOL... "Just how hot is IBM’s most venerable computer line? Well, revenue from the high-end machines known as mainframes surged 61% in the second quarter, capping the best four quarters of growth for the segment in five years."

Sandy Kemsley weighs in on IBM's BPM release.

"It’s important to look at how the IBM organization has realigned to allow for the new product release: Phil Gilbert, former president and CTO of Lombardi, now has overall responsibility for all of WebSphere BPM – including both the former Lombardi and WebSphere BPM products – plus ILOG rules management. Neil Ward-Dutton referred to this as the reverse takeover of IBM by Lombardi; when I had a chance for a 1:1 with Phil at Impact, I told him that we’d all bet that he would be gone from IBM after a year. He admitted that he originally thought so too, until they gave him the opportunity to do exactly what he knew needed to be done: bring together all of the IBM BPM offerings into a unified offering. This new product announcement is the beginning of that unification, but they still have a ways to go.

Let’s take a look at the product offering, then..."

"IBM has joined more than 45 leading cloud organizations to form the new Cloud Standards Customer Council, which is managed by OMG®. Organizations including Lockheed Martin, Citigroup and North Carolina State University have already joined the Council, which will help advance cloud adoption prioritizing key interoperability issues such as management, reference architectures, hybrid cloud, as well as security and compliance.

The Council will complement vendor-led cloud standards efforts and establish a core set of client–driven requirements to ensure cloud users will have the same freedom of choice, flexibility, and openness they have with traditional IT environments."

"IBM on Thursday announced a new service--dubbed "Smartcloud"--that will enable clients to use a Web-based interface to install applications and configure databases on a platform provided by the company. The initiative is part of IBM's push to expand into the cloud, one of the fastest growing areas in information technology."

.."IBM is attempting to differentiate itself from some of the main players who have already made big bets on the cloud. Competitors such as Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN) Web Services, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Google Inc. (GOOG) employ cloud features that let customers pay for what they use, like a utility, as opposed to plunking down a fixed investment.

IBM says its offering includes more features aimed toward large enterprise customers, such as heightened security, data privacy and the ability to certify the system for regulatory requirements. Moreover, IBM is offering a plethora of options, including public, private and hybrid clouds."

"In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we discuss and describe the positioning, functions, capabilities, and advanced programming techniques for IBM InfoSphere™ Streams.

Stream computing is a new paradigm. In traditional processing, queries are typically run against relatively static sources of data to provide a query result set for analysis. With stream computing, a process that can be thought of as a continuous query, that is, the results are continuously updated as the data sources are refreshed. So, traditional queries seek and access static data, but with stream computing, a continuous stream of data flows to the application and is continuously evaluated by static queries. However, with IBM InfoSphere Streams, those queries can be modified over time as requirements change."
