Looks interesting:

"Re-inventing the Cloud: Leverage the power of the cloud with only 3 lines of [Python] code. Leave the load balancing, auto scaling, and server management to us."

"...yet another Gartner hype cycle report is now out. You can expect to see its accompanying graphic (below) used in every vendor's presentation from now on. (There must be a law or something.)"

"I've worked on cloud-based systems for years now, and the common thread to cloud architecture is that there are no common threads to cloud architecture. Although you would think that common architectural patterns would emerge, the fact is clouds do different things and must use very different architectural approaches and technologies. In the world of cloud computing, that means those who are smart, creative, and resourceful seem to win out over those who are just smart."

"Bottom line: The greater the hype, the more the analyst inquiries, and the faster a given technology ascends to the Peak of Inflated Expectations. After reading this analysis it becomes clear that vendors who strive to be accurate, precise, real and relevant are winning deals right now and transcending the hype cycle to close sales. They may not being getting a lot of attention, but they are selling more because enterprises clearly understand their value."

"NYSE Technologies (a unit of NYSE Euronext) announced their new "community platform" cloud computing service today, running on vSphere and vCloud Director from VMware. The target customers for the service are capital markets organizations such as hedge funds and the trading departments of banks, with initial customers including a unit of Goldman Sachs and the hedge fund Millenium Partners.

...

NYSE's service is innovative in several ways. NYSE Euronext is primarily known for being a financial exchange as well as a provider of market data, rather than as a cloud provider. So why start offering cloud computing? NYSE saw how it could significantly simplify and improve its customers' competitiveness in capital markets by providing an integrated service that combined on-demand computing with access to the market (the exchanges), a low-latency secure network and instant access to data feeds. In a reversal of traditional approaches to IT, computing capacity is literally coming to the market and the data -- rather than the data and market being piped to the computers."

@Beaker's rockin' tribute to Don McLean, inspired by Amazon's EC2 woes. [If you aren't reading Beaker, you are missing out on tremendous cloud knowledge.]

"I started singin’
bye-bye, my clustered AMIs
I tried to launch one
it just sat there, much to my surprise
And them angry devs were telling stories and lies
Singin’ “this public cloud I now despise
“this public cloud, I now despise.”"

"IBM has joined more than 45 leading cloud organizations to form the new Cloud Standards Customer Council, which is managed by OMG®. Organizations including Lockheed Martin, Citigroup and North Carolina State University have already joined the Council, which will help advance cloud adoption prioritizing key interoperability issues such as management, reference architectures, hybrid cloud, as well as security and compliance.

The Council will complement vendor-led cloud standards efforts and establish a core set of client–driven requirements to ensure cloud users will have the same freedom of choice, flexibility, and openness they have with traditional IT environments."

"The world's biggest carmaker and the world's biggest software company are investing $12m (£7.3m) in Toyota Media Services, a Toyota unit which handles digital information services.

The aim is to provide features like GPS, power-management and multimedia services.

Toyota's 2012 hybrid vehicles will be the first to get the services.

The carmaker hopes to be able to offer them to customers worldwide by 2015.

The services will use Microsoft's "cloud computing" - the remote storage and handling of data - system called Azure."

"IBM on Thursday announced a new service--dubbed "Smartcloud"--that will enable clients to use a Web-based interface to install applications and configure databases on a platform provided by the company. The initiative is part of IBM's push to expand into the cloud, one of the fastest growing areas in information technology."

.."IBM is attempting to differentiate itself from some of the main players who have already made big bets on the cloud. Competitors such as Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN) Web Services, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Google Inc. (GOOG) employ cloud features that let customers pay for what they use, like a utility, as opposed to plunking down a fixed investment.

IBM says its offering includes more features aimed toward large enterprise customers, such as heightened security, data privacy and the ability to certify the system for regulatory requirements. Moreover, IBM is offering a plethora of options, including public, private and hybrid clouds."

Virtual networking advances & Amazon Virtual Private Cloud:

"You can now create a network topology in the AWS cloud that closely resembles the one in your physical data center including public, private, and DMZ subnets. Instead of dealing with cables, routers, and switches you can design and instantiate your network programmatically. You can use the AWS Management Console (including a slick new wizard), the command line tools, or the APIs. This means that you could store your entire network layout in abstract form, and then realize it on demand."

Is Cloud Computing a backlog killer?

"But while improved cost-efficiency and greater business agility are attractive, what really excites cloud enthusiasts are the macro-economic possibilities.

Many cloud evangelists believe that the phenomenon enables companies to boost overall productivity by allowing them to satisfy what Mr. Wardley describes as the "long tail" of unmet demand for IT resources found within most firms. This has led some experts to liken cloud computing to the Industrial Revolution."

So how big is the cloud? And how big will it be in, say, ten years? It depends on the definition. If you count web-based applications and online platforms, it is already huge and will become huger. Forrester predicts that it will grow to nearly $56 billion by 2020. But raw computing services, the core of the cloud, is much smaller—and will not get much bigger. Forrester, reckons it will be worth $4 billion in 2020 (although this has much to do with the fact that even in the cloud, the cost of computer hardware will continue to drop, points out Stefan Ried of Forrester).
