Wiggio - Makes it easy to work in groups.

A collaboration tool that on the surface seems to be very similar to Basecamp with the addition of a calendar. Something to check out the next time I need to herd some cats. It balks at FF 2.0 though... A bit early to be requiring people to upgrade, I think.

Sumopaint.com beta - Image Editing in the Browser

Paint on steroids - an online drawing/painting tool. It has layers which is a lot better than paint! Great to have handy when you're on a machine that doesn't have Photoshop and need to whip up something.

OpenDrive: Learn More about OpenDrive The Online Disk

A service for file backup, sharing and synchronization. A nice platform that also lets you publish files to other people you specify by grabbing a link to it in Windows Explorer. 1GB beta with plans that cost about $1/gb/year. Seems like an interesting option that is a competitor to Microsoft's Live Mesh.

Online Backup from Backblaze

A service that sounds a bit like Carbonite: they backup "unlimited" data for $5/mo. Their servers are used by some big-names (Sun Microsystems for example) so that lends them a bit of cred. I have emailed tech support to see if you can actually put a significant amount of data on the service for the $5 plan (more than 100GB). We'll see if they consider that "abuse".

widgenie - Home

A tool that is supposed to pull data from many different sources (feeds, spreadsheets, google docs, Amazon SimpleDB and others) and visualize it in charts, graphs and more. Packages it all into widgets that you can share on your site and allows you to track usage statistics. Not sure how I would use it but good to know the tool exists.

Dabbleboard

A tool for collaborating online. It works like a whiteboard allowing you to draw on it. Also includes basic text tools and some shapes to create things like flowcharts. And allows you to import images that can then be annotated. Handy site.

SUSE Studio Signup

A tool that helps you build live cds and VMs for applications. A cool use of virtualization that can also run on a USB key. One more step toward making the OS choice obsolete.

John Resig - Processing.js

This is amazing. It could replace Flash once people start adopting the latest series of browsers that support the canvas element. Wow. Always expect great things from the author of jQuery.

Microsoft Live Labs : Volta

A library that is similar to RJS in Ruby on Rails. It lets you write code in C# which can be spilt into tiers. The client tier is translated into the equivalent Javascript. Still a CTP and not sure how it fits in with ASP.Net (or if it does) yet.

Synthasite

  • A site that lets you build Ajaxy websites through a "non-coding" interface.  You can host the sites with them or download the PHP code to hoste somewhere else.  Reminds me a bit of Ning without the socialization.

SkillsFeed - Agile eLearning, Web 2.0 Microlearning Platform and Career Development Tool

  • A site that is supposed to let people learn about things in small chunks quickly. Users can create their own courses or just use those provided by others. Supposed to be short lessons that are quickly absorbed and narrowly focused. Interesting idea. - bluecockatoo on 2006-09-28

SNIPPit

  • Another attempt at a resource to keep and organize your notes online. Organization by tags and tag clouds. As interesting as some of these attempts are, it's kind of scary to become dependant on one at an early stage as you may end up losing your data if it goes away. - bluecockatoo on 2006-08-31

  • A P2P service that allows access to your files by creating proxy urls through their service. You distribute the urls to your audience who can then retrieve the file directly from your computer. No web hosting necessary. Currently the site has no privacy restrictions on the urls, but that is coming. Once that happens it will be truly useful. - bluecockatoo on 2006-08-28
