10 Wind Turbines That Push the Limits of Design - AWEA Report 20% Wind Report Card and Wind Turbine Design - Popular Mechanics
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) released their 20% Wind Report Card on July 8, following up on a study in which the Department of Energy proposed a goal where 20 percent of U.S. electricity comes from wind energy by 2030. The AWEA gave the overall U.S. push for wind power a “solid B”—high marks from an advocacy group that grades U.S. infrastructure. The highest letter in the report was an A- awarded for “Technology Development.” This is no big surprise—for years now, the government, alternative-energy researchers and entrepreneurs have been putting time and money into making better tech for cleaner, more efficient energy production. Here are 10 wind turbine designs that push the limits of the current design and may help the U.S. get back to being an A student by 2030.
Green pioneers brigade: Shai Agassi - Times Online
To counter criticism that electric cars “run on coal” because the electricity used to charge their batteries is generated by coal-burning power stations, Better Place will buy green energy from solar and wind generators.
It will then sell drivers “clean” pay-as-you-go miles — £150 for 1,000 miles, say, £300 for 3,000 miles, and a few hundred pounds a month for unlimited driving.
From IT to Cleantech: New Sources of Innovation | MIT World
Imagine a response to oil dependence and climate change that offers people around the world a new and improved version of the car, premised on redesigning infrastructure top to bottom with green technology in a way that recharges ailing national economies. Applying both an entrepreneurial spirit and a systems engineering approach, Shai Agassi has devised just such a visionary plan for cracking these vexing global challenges.
Q&A: Agassi's Better Place idea--brilliant or nuts? | The Car Tech blog - CNET Reviews
If we didn't exist, the car guys would have to invent us because they would not build it. They'll hope somebody else somebody else builds. The funny part is that we've invented ourselves out a lack of desire of all parties to do it. And you see them on panels, see them on discussions, they're extremely defensive. Instead of thinking, somebody just opened up a new segment of the market, let me take advantage of it. Carlos Ghosn of Renault Nissan said, somebody took a problem off my hands, let's build volume cars, which is what we know what to do.

Shai Agassi Delivers Lecture at Harvard Kennedy School
Shai Agassi delivers lecture, “The Future of Transportation: Ending our Addiction on Oil,” at the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum. Cosponsored by Harvard’s Institute of Politics, the Center for Public Leadership and the HKS Israel Caucus, the event drew more than 400 attendees, who came to learn more about Agassi’s work to create a massive infrastructure for electric cars.
Spanish Island of El Hierro's Carbon Neutral Energy Plans Soon to be Completed : TreeHugger
A couple years ago TreeHugger highlighted the efforts of the island of El Hierro (one of the smaller of the Canary Islands, with a population of about 10,000) to make the switch over to generating all of its power from renewable energy sources. For an update on this interesting project, the BBC is running a short video clip which is worth checking out.
desiretoinspire.net: Misool Eco Resort
...we've been designing our resort and home in West Papua, Indonesia. We're an eco resort in the true sense of the word, using only reclaimed wood in the construction of our 11 cottages, dive shop, restaurant, and pier. I could go on and on about that stuff, but I think the aspect that might be of most interest to you is our Water Cottages, designed by UK-born but Australian-based architect Viv Faithfull at WH Architects in Melbourne. There are 8 of them built on stilts over a tranquil lagoon."
The 100-Year-Old Electric Car - Jay Leno's Garage - Popular Mechanics
All the current interest in hybrids and other vehicles with some sort of alternative powertrain is kind of amusing to me. Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm all for pursuing other ways to power cars. (Click here to visit Jay's Green Garage!) But I smile because I've owned three alternative energy cars for years. The newest was built in 1925; the oldest, 1909. Each one is a rolling manifestation of a brilliant idea. Sadly, they were all way ahead of their time and all three makes failed.
Thinking Small
“Don’t get in debt, don’t think in terms of a career (work at a job for one reason only, to get paid so you can buy a place to land and grow some food), live in a small shelter, unload unnecessary stuff, reduce monthly expenses, extract yourself from the enslavement of modern technological materialism, stay healthy by exercising, eat a simple, wholesome diet, develop some practical skills, practice your art or trade and serve your local community. Teach your children to value true pleasures. Real wealth is perishable: food, health, trees, flowers, herbs, healthy soil, clean water, fresh air, friends and art. Learn to value and appreciate these above all else.”
Researchers Say Hippy Reasons for Living Sustainably Beat Out "Hope for Future" : TreeHugger
The researchers argue that getting people to focus on the positive human qualities that living sustainably highlight - love, sharing, caring for others - will get more people interested in living sustainably. That's because even climate change nay-sayers are interested in doing the right thing.
Bush Retreat by Farnan Findlay Architects : TreeHugger
Four 6,000 gallon tanks hold water gathered from the roof; a wind turbine and photovoltaics generate electricity for 14 batteries that hold a week's worth of electricity (do they have longer nights in Australia?) LED lighting, passive solar design, in an elegant modern envelope. As Dwell says, none of the "down-on-the-alfalfa-farm nuts and berries aesthetic associated with sustainable architecture."
Akeena Aims to Make Solar Cheaper With AC Integrated Panels : TreeHugger
Akeena Solar, maker of photovoltaic panels and racking systems, and Enphase Energy, maker of microinverters, have joined up to make integrated systems even more integrated. Taking out steps in the installation process, taking out steps in the troubleshooting process and giving you AC power faster - all in the hopes of making solar upwards of 25% cheaper.

Pioneers show Americans how to live "off-grid": ENN -- Know Your Environment
With energy prices going through the roof, an alternative lifestyle powered by solar panels and wind turbines has suddenly become more appealing to some. For architect Todd Bogatay, it has been reality for years.
When he bought this breezy patch of scrub-covered mountaintop with views to Mexico more than two decades ago, he was one of only a few Americans with an interest in wind- and solar-powered homes.
Now, Bogatay is surrounded by 15 neighbors who, like him, live off the electricity grid, with power from solar panels and wind turbines that he either built or helped to install.

The Energy Challenge - No Furnaces but Heat Aplenty in Innovative ‘Passive Houses’ - Series - NYTimes.com
Using ultrathick insulation and complex doors and windows, the architect engineers a home encased in an airtight shell, so that barely any heat escapes and barely any cold seeps in. That means a passive house can be warmed not only by the sun, but also by the heat from appliances and even from occupants’ bodies.
And in Germany, passive houses cost only about 5 to 7 percent more to build than conventional houses.
