Bittorrents in FreeNAS « ejes consulting
Among the many features that I enjoy in the FreeNAS project, one of my very favorite ones is the Bittorrent Server that it has built in.
Really it’s just a verion of Transmission bittorrent web client which I remember from Mac OS. (http://www.transmissionbt.com/) but running in WebGUI mode (by default on your freeNAS server on port 9091 http://freenas:9091 or similar)
The features that I want specifically is the blocklist feature, which allows you to download a list of blocked ips from known malware locations or otherwise malicious sites, and the ability to encrypt my traffic so that my ISP cannot detect my bittorrent traffic.
An Introduction to FreeNAS | The Life of Hex
In this tutorial, I am going to take you through the steps of building, installing, and configuring your new FreeNAS server.
HowTo Install FreeNAS
FreeNAS is probably one of the easiest installations out there. I can’t believe that it takes only a few minutes to perform a complete installation of an operating system.
This article will walk you through the installation process for FreeNAS. If you successfully follow the instructions in this article, you will have completed everything needed from the actual computer. Once these steps are done, you will be able to remove the monitor, keyboard, and mouse from the system as everything else will be done from the webUI (web-based user interface)! There is also a video showing an actual FreeNAS installation on VMWare.

I'm going to share my experience with FreeNAS, the freeBSD-based, open-source NAS software for turning your old PC or new, low-powered Atom-based PC into a NAS (networked attached storage). Since NAS is all the rage now, why not build your own, right?
SourceForge.net: FreeNAS
NAS (Network Attached Storage) server supporting: UPS, CIFS/SMB, FTP, NFS, RSYNC, SSH, AFP, Unison, UPnP, Webserver, iSCSI protocols, local and MS AD authentication, SoftRAID (JBOD,0,1,5), disk encryption, S.M.A.R.T, WebGUI. Requires only 64MB on DOM.
Local User Management in FreeNAS
In general, once the FreeNAS server is configured and running, it doesn't really need much attention, it should just work. However, there are lots of different features which can be configured. In this article by Gary Sims, we will see how user management is done in FreeNAS.
John Mee - Some programmer in Sydney » Schedule transmission bittorrent
Problem
Transmission doesn’t include any scheduling functionality to start/stop/trottle torrents during the day/week.
Solution
Don’t run the gui client. Instead (or as well) invoke transmission-daemon from the command line and use crontab to apply the schedule via transmission-remote

Chris covers the powerful software that can transform an old PC into a full blown NAS.
LinuxPlanet - Reviews - 3 Minutes to 3 Terabytes: VIA ARTiGO and FreeNAS Store Terabytes in a Shoebox - 3 Minutes to 3 Terabytes
Network Attached Storage (NAS) is one answer to sharing large storage devices over a network. You could buy a NAS device from your favorite local or Internet supplier, but chances are you'll wind up with something less than what a "real" NAS has to offer. That's where VIA's ARTiGO A2000 comes in. The A2000 fits a full-featured computer with space for two 3.5" SATA drives in a package about the size of a shoebox. Add to the hardware the FreeNAS open source software and you've got a really capable storage solution.
FreeNAS Home Server: Web Server
If you want a local webpage (or website), it is easy to create something simple with TiddlyWiki. Of course, if you have any webpage or website in html, that will suffice.
Perhaps a page of your favourite links, to ensure you can access the same bookmarks from any networked computer?
Anyway, the HTTP server is easy to enable. However, there is some groundwork to ensure it works smoothly.

Using what I've learned in my last video, I am now making a much larger FreeNAS file server.
freenas-rss-extension - Google Code
An extension for FreeNAS written in PHP similar to Automatic. Automatically downloads and parses RSS feeds against a set of user defined filters. Allows for feed subscriptions and custom download directories for both feeds and filters.
Filters are Perl Compatible Regular Expression allowing for extremely fine tuned filtering of feeds.
FreeNAS Knowledgebase / 633. Can I make partitions for FreeNAS and how?
No, not for the moment, you have to wait for version 0.7 or..

Gizmodo - Giz Explains: What a RAID Hard Drive Array Is (and Why You Want One) - Raid
The most likely place you're going to run into RAID—if you're not familiar with it already—is when you jump into the world of network attached storage, aka NAS, providing a huge bank of hard-drive goodness for storage, backup and media streaming across all of your home or office computers and devices.
But okay, let's jump into the basic kinds of RAID setups, known annoyingly as levels, even though they are mostly different. If you wanna skim, the ones you should know are RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5.
Troubleshooting the FreeNAS server
This article by Gary Sims, is a guide on how to solve problems with your FreeNAS server. It covers where to look for information about the problem as well as how to hunt down problems by being methodical. It also looks at the common problems people have with their FreeNAS servers including networking problems and problems with RAID.
Configuring Disks in FreeNAS
If you’ve been following along with the other FreeNAS articles, we have installed and performed basic system configuration for the FreeNAS server. Now we are ready to configure the disks in the system.
My RAID5 self-build NAS project - AVForums.com
AIM
Bascially, to build a cheap NAS box. I want to stick with a RAID5 configuration, which means minimum 3 disks. 2 disk NAS boxes are available for reasonable prices now, but the 4 drives boxes are much more expensive, and spending £100s isnt an option right now. So I am going to build my own
REQUIREMENTS
As lower power consumption as possible
It needs to be built very cheaply
Wake on LAN - i want to be able to wake the NAS up from within Windows Media Centre on my HTPC
Power saving - The NAS needs to go into power saving/hibernate/suspend mode when inactive.
RAID 5
