Can This Time-Traveling Marriage Be Saved From Its Own Banality? - The Time Traveler's Wife - io9

The Time Traveler's Wife is a story about deja vu. Everything that happens has already happened, and will happen again, thanks to the story's endless time loops. So maybe that's why everything in the movie feels so tiresomely familiar. Spoilers...

The myriad of possibilities that Star Trek left open for a sequel also opened many doors to potential disaster. Will Star Trek 2 get sucked into a red matter wormhole? Or will it match or even top the success of Abrams' first film and be the Wrath of Khan of the Trek 2.0 franchise? Let us offer some advice to make sure it's the latter:

And let's face it--Goodfellas may be a great film, but it won't have people oohing and ahhing about the fantastic picture and booming surround sound.

Mindfuck Movies by Matthew Baldwin - The Morning News

There’s a certain brand of movie that I most enjoy. Some people call them “Puzzle Movies.” Others call them “Brain Burners.” Each has, at some point or another, been referred to as “that flick I watched while I was baked out of my mind.”

But the phrase I find myself employing, when casting around for a succinct term for the entire genre, is “Mindfuck Movies.”

Opening salvos in landmark piracy case - BizTech - Technology - smh.com.au

In a landmark case that could stop pirates in their tracks, leading ISP iiNet has formally defended itself against claims by movie studios that it willingly permitted customers to download movies illegally.

In the Federal Court today, Australia's third largest ISP - which could face millions in damages - argued the case was "like suing the electricity company for things people do with their electricity".

The Mewl: Pat Suzuki - How High The Moon

Some of you might remember this song from the opening scene of Biloxi Blues that starred Matthew Broderick and Chris Walken...

Oddly this version wasn't recorded until 1953 or so, long after the world war WWII. It's my favorite version of the song, as so many other singers give it a nice rollicking beat. Not here. This is one of the laziest musical rolls that could be given this song. It's slow, and that's how it should be. All other versions of this song somehow sound wrong after Pat Suzuki's approach.

Star Wars: Retold (by someone who hasn't seen it) on Vimeo

My friend Amanda had never seen a whole Star Wars film. When I asked her if she wanted to watch the original trilogy she said that she would, but that she already knew what happens. So I took out my voice recorder and asked her to start from the top.

I then created some very basic animation in Final Cut to go along with her narration.

Top 10 Sci Fi Flicks For The Thinking Man (beerandscifi version) | Beer and Sci-Fi

Rotten Tomatoes released a list of “10 Sci Fi Flicks For the Thinking Man (or Woman)” and I have created an alternative which I believe to be much better. Both lists are less about fighting aliens and outer space battles than they are a list that contains “more thoughtful movies as to what it means to be human.” I usually can count on Rotten Tomatoes, but for this list I think they got a good portion of it wrong AND I think many of the movies they have picked are movies that are just recycled into most science fiction movie lists. Their list isn’t terrible, but it is typical. How many times do we need to see Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes in a top 10 list? My list will contain alternative options with movies that you may not have seen.

Star Wars Origins - Frank Herbert's Dune

Lucas has often acknowledged Dune as an inspiration. In early drafts of the Star Wars script the influence was much more obvious - the story was full of feudalistic Houses and dictums, and the treasure the Princess was guarding wasn't the Death Star plans, but a shipment of "aura spice." The final version of Star Wars is related to Dune mostly in spirit: a science fiction heroic fantasy treated seriously. Of all the ideas George Lucas inherited from Frank Herbert, the subtle lesson was how to use science fiction to create myth.
