ripping a DVD to your HD. Version 2.6.6 is free:

If you want to back up YOUR latest commercial DVDs, you
need to join the MTR forum, donate to the developer, and
get the latest beta of MTR 3.0 (currently 13e).

Once you get the rip onto HD, Toast or DVD2OneX (DTOX)
is the choice to compress and burn.
