I thought it'd be a good time to find a bunch of stuff that the Bible bans... stuff that's a lot LESS convenient. Don't worry, though... just because I'm pointing it out, that doesn't mean you now have to follow it. It's a lot easier to keep discriminating against gay people for no particular reason than to stop eating bacon, after all.
Here are 11 things that are technically banned by the Bible. (All quotes are translations from the New American Standard Bible, but, because I'm actually trying to maintain serious journalistic integrity here, I cross-referenced several other translations to make sure I wasn't missing the point.)
Why matchbox twenty's Rob Thomas is my new hero on Hitfix
You can't only support the issues that directly affect your life because what it ultimately comes down to is that any time any one's freedoms are eclipsed, everyone's rights are in danger. There will always be someone who is threatened by "the other": i.e., someone who is not the same as them. And yet they don't seem to intuitively understand that one day, someone else who has the power will see them as "the other" and will come for their freedoms.
Rob Thomas: The Big Gay Chip on My Shoulder
A civil union has to do with death. It's essentially a document that gives you lower taxes and the right to let your faux spouse collect your insurance when you pass away. A marriage is about life. It's about a commitment. And this argument is about allowing people to have the right to make that commitment, even if it doesn't make sense to you. Anything else falls under the category of "separate but equal" and we know how that works out.
Seriously, I thought that was metaphorical... [PIC]
Funny how those Christians most focused on Judgment Day ignore the one part of the Bible that directly addresses what will happen on that day -- and from the mouth of Jesus himself:
The Varieties of Biblical Marriage | Unreasonable Faith
We hear a lot about “biblical marriage” these days. Some of us might not be clear on what that means. The website Religious Tolerance has provided a helpful article on the types of marriage found in the pages of the bible.
Daylight Atheism > Little-Known Bible Verses XIII: Fetuses Don’t Count
It's consistently been part of the anti-choice strategy to treat unborn fetuses as separate, autonomous people, even well before the point of viability. For instance, the anti-abortion website Abort73.com says:
It is illegal to execute a pregnant woman on death row because the fetus living inside her is a distinct human being who cannot be executed for the crimes of the mother. (source)
In fact, such niceties did not occur to the authors of the Bible. They did not value the unborn nearly so highly, as we can see from a little-known Bible verse.
Meacham: The End of Christian America | Newsweek Religion | Newsweek.com
The percentage of self-identified Christians has fallen 10 points in the past two decades. How that statistic explains who we are now—and what, as a nation, we are about to become.
Obama's Fascinating Interview with Cathleen Falsani - Steven Waldman
The most detailed and fascinating explication of Barack Obama's faith came in a 2004 interview he gave Chicago Sun Times columnist Cathleen Falsani when he was running for U.S. Senate in Illinois. The column she wrote about the interview has been quoted and misquoted many times over, but she'd never before published the full transcript in a major publication.
Because of how controversial that interview became, Falsani has graciously allowed us to print the full conversation here.
'The heretic' by Laura Miller - Salon - RichardDawkins.net
The heretic Giordano Bruno has been called a martyr to science and an occultist, but a new book argues that the brilliant philosopher's unconventional behavior did him in.
Jefferson Bible reveals Founding Father's view of God, faith - Los Angeles Times
He compiled the four Gospels into one text without miracles, ending with Jesus' burial rather than the resurrection.
In God's name - National - smh.com.au
Church and state need to get out of each other's pockets, and give secularism a fair go, argues Keith Austin.
www.kansascity.com | 02/22/2008 | MIDWEST VOICES: Let us bow our heads in thanks for atheists
Nonbelievers know a lot about Christianity and Judaism, most having been raised in religious families. Believers, however, are somewhat less clued-in about atheists. Here are a few simple truths about who they are, and aren’t.
Christians Wrong About Heaven, Says Bishop - TIME
It therefore comes as a something of a shock that Wright doesn't believe in heaven — at least, not in the way that millions of Christians understand the term.

Daylight Atheism > Wolves in the Fold
with the pastoral body only rests the necessary right and authority for promoting the end of the society and directing all its members towards that end; the one duty of the multitude is to allow themselves to be led, and, like a docile flock, to follow th
While most Christians embrace Christmas, a few recall a more complex history -- dailypress.com
Christmas became acceptable as a family-centered holiday, Restad said, once it lost its overtly religious significance.
At the same time, aspects of the holiday like decorated trees and gift-giving became status symbols for an aspirant middle class.
