Pioneering research shows ‘Google Generation’ is a myth
-
A new study overturns the common assumption that the ‘Google
Generation' – youngsters born or brought up in the Internet age
– is the most web-literate. The first ever virtual longitudinal
study carried out by the CIBER research team at University College
London claims that, although young people demonstrate an apparent
ease and familiarity with computers, they rely heavily on search
engines, view rather than read and do not possess the critical and
analytical skills to assess the information that they find on the
web. -

Despite The Internet, Google Generation Lacks Analytical Skills -- Google Generation

For one, information literacy has not improved with the widening access to technology. Instead, the speed of Web searching means little time is spent evaluating information for relevance, accuracy, or authority.
Young people also have difficulty in developing an effective search strategy. As a result, they have a strong preference for using natural language in searching, rather than analyzing which keywords might be more effective. -
The study also dispelled some myths about the Google Generation. For one, researchers found no evidence that young people were more impatient in fulfilling their information needs than others. Research also found that young people do not place more credibility on the Internet and their peers as information sources, but place more value on teachers, relatives and textbooks.

Perhaps understanding and answers are overrated. "The problem with computers," Pablo Picasso is rumored to have said, "is that they only give you answers." These huge data-driven correlative systems will give us lots of answers -- good answers -- but that is all they will give us. That's what the OneComputer does -- gives us good answers. In the coming world of cloud computing perfectly good answers will become a commodity. The real value of the rest of science then becomes asking good questions.

Microsoft in Denial: Google Threat is Classic Disruption - Silicon Alley Insider
-
Disruptive technologies do not destroy existing market leaders overnight. They do not get adopted by the entire market at the same time. They do not initially seem to be "better" products (in fact, in the early going, they are often distinctly "worse.") They are not initially a viable option for mainstream users. They do not win head-to-head feature tests. Initially, they do not even seem to be a threat.
-
Microsoft makes most of its money selling applications that Google now
gives away for free (or nearly free)--applications that contain hundreds of features that the vast majority of customers will never use. Google's web-based versions aren't as feature rich as Microsoft Office, but they are simple, cheap, and convenient, and, for many users (SAI, for example), they get the job done.
Knols Project: Google Experimenting With User Generated Encyclopedic Pages
-
The official Google blog
has a post tonight about a new project that's in closed, private beta. The program is called Knols, or "units of knowledge." Knols participants will write reference pages on any topic, using a Google content creation tool apparently in the works, and those pages will be highlighted in Google search results. Authors will choose whether they want ads to appear and will receive a "substantial revenue share."
