The Free Universal Encyclopedia and Learning Resource - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)

  • Just as we were starting a project, GNUpedia, to develop a
    free encyclopedia, the Nupedia encyclopedia project
    adopted the GNU Free Documentation
    License     and thus became a free commercial project. So we
    decided to merge GNUpedia project into Nupedia. Now, the Wikipedia encyclopedia project has
    adopted the philosophy of Nupedia and taken it even further. We
    encourage you to visit and contribute to the site.

  • We are building the world's largest
    international, peer-reviewed encyclopedia.  It is free.  The project is largely "on hold"
    but poised to get moving again with renewed vigor when funding is found.

Knols Project: Google Experimenting With User Generated Encyclopedic Pages

  • The official Google blog has a post tonight about a new project that's in closed, private beta. The program is called Knols, or "units of knowledge." Knols participants will write reference pages on any topic, using a Google content creation tool apparently in the works, and those pages will be highlighted in Google search results. Authors will choose whether they want ads to appear and will receive a "substantial revenue share."

    Veropedia is a collaborative effort by a group of Wikipedians to collect the best of Wikipedia's content, clean it up, vet it, and save it for all time. These articles are stable and cannot be edited. The result is a quality stable version that can be trusted by students, teachers, and anyone else who is looking for top-notch, reliable information.
  • So is this an expert-driven project, like Citizendium?


    Not at all. Our material is written by Wikipedia contributors. The role of experts and academics will be to check it and, ideally, approve it. Their comments will be given back to our contributors to incorporate back into the articles to make them even better. We provide a meta-layer for Wikipedia, or in simpler terms, if you think of Wikipedia as a diamond mine, we think of ourselves as jewelers who provide a finished product to the public. We think of this as true collaboration.
