During our Insight Event last week, Sam Dimond (Director of Knowledge Systems) outlined his thoughts on how to get started with social tools, drawing from his experience of the adoption of blogs and wikis in Clifford Chance.
Also, with email there is the perception that you have more control because you can select recipients, but in reality you have less control over the message because you can’t control where it ultimately goes. Any of the original recipients can forward it, and this can leak sensitive information, take things out of context, and give you a whole new set of problems that require a lot of time and work to deal with. That can mean even more lost productivity from more important work.

A wiki, by contrast is a “pull” medium - it pulls people in to look at content on a single, shared page that everyone can edit. And despite some vendors trying to constrain its definition to things like blogs, wikis, etc. social software needs to be examined as a continuum of software tools and applications - not as a time-slice to support a particular product agenda.
Social software has an added dimension, which is that it should not be handled or implemented by IT departments or even marketing or HR departments, and certainly not in a traditionally organised and run enterprise
