TIBCO Upgrades tibbr with GEO and Other New Capabilities

"TIBCO launched tibbr, a heavy duty and secure social platform a year ago and is approaching 1M users at companies like Macy's, KPMG, and shipping giant OOCL. Now they are adding a number of new features. There are five guiding principles in this effort. First, you need to be able to have users get started right away and it needs to be easy to use. The consumer Web has set this expectation and reduced budgets demand it. Gone are the days of six month IT projects and extensive employee training programs. Here is a sample user’s view of tibbr."

- Third, context has become king more than content. They have introduced subject filters to their activity streams so you take out the fire hose effect
- Fifth, you need to make IT happy. So they have focused on such issues as compliance and risk management.
- Tibbr GEO is turns physical places into data hubs that can immediately stream important insights relevant to that specific place. Instead of checking in to a location, the location checks into you – and brings you the relevant information, helping you discover important insights and work faster wherever you are.
- tibbr GEO gives companies the ability to tag important places, whether in the enterprise or as part of the extended enterprise. As tibbr users approach these places, they’re automatically presented relevant in-stream information. The airline industry is a good example.

Making Activity Streams More Manageable

"In my last post Don't Cross the Streams, I challenged the idea that integrating multiple sources of information into activity streams is a good thing. This struck a nerve with some people (mainly vendors) while others completely agreed with me. A friend of mine an fellow industry analyst suggested that I follow up by posting possible solutions, so below are the few of the areas I think can help: "

Not everyone wants to see status updates in the same place they see support tickets or new sales opportunities.
If we are going to continue down the path of taking dozens of different pieces of information and cramming them into one place, then a single stream is not the way to go

- Most enterprise products like Yammer, SocialCast, Jive and Socialtext enable the creation of groups, but these are not the same as lists. A group is public (at least to it's members) and controlled by an admin.
- In order to make sure they don't miss important information there should be options for being notified via email and/or SMS,
- these notifications just create more email, but for most people that is still a very necessary evil.
- Enterprise software vendor Tibbr has an excellent filtering system, where people can easily set up their own streams based on a combination of parameters such as subject, sender or time. You can give each stream a name, set up the rules and viola
- Facebook does this by providing a choice of Most Recent or Top Stories. The problem is perhaps 3 people on the planet have any idea what logic goes into actually making something a "top story
- NewGator has a nice feature where you can display the activity stream as a heatmap. Colour coding is used to display the most active conversations, which you can then click on to drill down into more detail
- Jive Software has a "What Matters" stream which their help describes as "an engine that collects and analyzes user activity in the community to recommend useful content, people, and places to individual users, and reports trending content and people. The Recommender looks at business relationships, user expertise, and areas of interest based on a user's behavior in the community to suggest relevant content that Jive knows a user has not yet seen.
- BM has told me they are working on similar smart filters for IBM Connections which will leverage the power of their Cognos analytics tools.
- I do think automated smart filtering has potential to help people navigate huge amounts of content. However, I remain skeptical about an algorithm's ability to decide what I should, or more importantly what I want to see, especially at a specific time or context.

tibbr 3.5 turns the world into interactive post-its

- tibbr’s new feature would have come in handy: tibbr GEO. In the example above, you’d simply subscribe to your points of interest, e.g. grocery, bakery and the beer section, hold up your mobile in front of you and let the augmented reality guide you through the store
- Of course that would mean that everyone goes out and gets tibbr. I’m sure tibbr wouldn’t mind that, but that does mean that tibbr has to be really device- and platform-agnostic, and stay that way.

I’ve been writing about this since 2009 and increasingly, scores of examples exist that show tepid or even failed social/collaboration uptake at large organizations due to the fact that context around collaboration was just not apparent.

- TIBCO also has a clear appreciation for how much time the average employee spends in structured work-flow and process activities. By extension, it also aware of the white spaces that exist outside of that workflow, and the daily scramble to find people and information outside of those work-flows to effectively complete the a given business activity.

7 critical aspects of Tibbr’s big step forward for enterprise social software

Before the event I summarized some of the very positive commentary on Tibbr since the San Francisco launch two weeks ago.

It’s now time to offer my own thoughts. Here is what I think is most interesting and important about Tibbr."

Tibbr at its heart is very simple – you can follow the activity streams from individuals, discussion on particular subjects, and from applications. Bringing these all together in one interface means that all activity across the organization relevant to the individual can be brought together in one easy-to-use interface.
This is critical, because the reality is that most social software suites today are an overlay to core enterprise applications – they enable conversations and collaborative work but don’t link in a meaningful way to core systems such as CRM or ERP systems. Tibbr is from the outset linked to all applications, drawing on the 140 technology and application adaptors that TIBCO has developed. An open SDK is available for companies who have in-house applications that they want to integrate with.

- llowing people to follow subjects immediately surfaces those who are interested in a particular topic, and from there it is fairly easy to identify who has expertise and is highly regarded in the group
- Work and personal stream integration.
  Tibbr allows staff to pull in their personal streams such as Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr into the . This has to be approved by the corporate administrator as something they wish to allow. However given the blurring of work and personal boundaries for many professionals (not least that they want to build relationships with people they do business with) means that many organizations will choose to allow this.
- Part of the solution is in training people in how to use social media well. I know many masters of Twitter and other consumer social tools. However many others start the wrong way, get frustrated, and sometimes give up. Knowing how to select who to follow and manage multiple streams is a skill set that is yet to be learned by many corporate staff. Those skills need to be complemented by automated filters.

More than just another microblogging tool - tibbr

"Earlier this week I attended the UK launch event for just another Twitter style microblogging tool for the enterprise like Chatter or Yammer or Signals inside SocialText. This one's called tibbr. Some people would have been underwhelmed and said "so what?", but I got excited - I can see some huge potential here, and I'd argue that every enterprise should be taking a serious look at this product. Let me try and explain."

This is about moving away from being trapped inside your inbox, sharing documents and files by email, which means that as soon as they are sent you are out of control with multiple copies and "who's got the latest version?". To avoid that we use things like blogs to support conversations around an idea, or wikis to collate, develop and share information, people profiles to help you find the expertise within an organisation that you need to do your job, or microblogging tools like Twitter and Yammer for more efficient team communication.
I got excited when Salesforce Chatter came along, because that provided a family of collaboration tools on the same platform as the business system that could be easily integrated with the standard applications, as well as integrating with any new processes you might need to create on their Force.com development environment. For some companies where the Salesforce's application suite and available partner products are a good match, this will provide a good fit, but not every company will want to change all of their systems to this one company solution

- It sits like a business oriented Twitter or Facebook "hub" over the top of all of a company's systems, taking feeds from in house business applications from SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Saleforce and others, as well feeds from external social networks like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, or also from external news and blog feeds that might be relevant for the company's personnel. They have APIs for configuring further feeds and apps, but the crucial factor is that they have the security and policy management in place so that this data can be properly surfaced and managed in the controlled and secure way that an enterprise needs.
- I can chose to follow everything on a whole topic, or maybe I'm only interested in a few of the sub-topics. TIBCO are trying to address the problem of signal to noise ratio with this filtering approach. All of this new collaboration data might just add to the information overload, but if I can filter things properly I'll be able to discover just what I want to see, and get alerted on topics that are important to me.
- TIBCO's opportunity comes from their agnostic approach to applications. They've got 25 years experience of linking to most of the technology stuff that a big corporation uses. They can provide a collaboration layer that is easy to use for everyone, but which is like a symbiotic plant with roots growing across the enterprise in to all of the existing applications, along with the ability to reach out and connect to more.
