"Over the past few years, as organizations deploy social tools, expertise location has become one of the more common solutions associated with "Enterprise 2.0". The general assumption includes two primary ways of identifying "experts". The first method assumes that employee use of social tools (e.g., blogs, wikis, micro-blogging, communities) and social applications (e.g., ideation), enables their talent and business insight to be more visible and therefore more discoverable by co-workers. The second method revolves around the employee profile created as part of an enterprise social network site. It is assumed that employees will readily create and maintain rich profiles where they willingly share information about their job history, interests, hobbies, education, and areas of expertise."

  • e study found that members of Gen Y were more likely to monitor privacy settings than are older people, and more often delete comments or remove their names from photos so they can't be identified. In another survey by the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, 88% of a sample of Gen Y-ers voiced support for a law that would require websites to delete captured information. Sixty-two percent of them wanted the right to know everything a website knows about them.
  • Look at the broader issue. I believe that collaboration through social networks is an important way of building trust. Trust is built on transparency. If you are in the business of enabling collaboration through social networks, you have to demonstrate that you can be trusted. So, I ask, can you afford to change the rules midway? Or do frequent changes corrode the very foundations of trust?

E2.0 seems to be entrenched in the domain of the CIO and IT organizations. That’s a shame because it really does spread across many domains. Gautam Ghosh lamented the lack of attendees or speakers from the HR realm in a few tweets during the event. Yet many of the talks were certainly around employee behavior and engagement.

I have to be honest. There are many things that are still left unanswered this year. I didn’t expect solutions but I was looking for more thought on the following ideas:

  • ROI -  Surprisingly, I agree with Dennis  Howlett. I don’t think people should be looking for a single answer or  approach to figuring this out. What was being affirmed is that are some  cases of ROI particularly in the external or public-facing environments,  but very rare for internal enterprise 2.0 environments

  • Mais le salarié a aussi sa liberté d'expression. Sur les réseaux sociaux, il peut se montrer critique sur ses conditions de travail, son salaire, l'attitude de son employeur.
  • Enfin, last but not least, si Social Sentry était autorisée sur le sol français en dépit de toutes ces réserves, son implémentation en entreprise exigerait une consultation préalable des instances représentatives du personnel mais aussi une information du personnel puisqu'il s'agit – explicitement – d'un moyen de contrôle des salariés.

"I am not sure whether this is due to the fact that most of these Enterprise Social Software offerings have been designed and developed in the US, where we all know privacy and security may not be as tight and strict (Probably to the extreme!) as they are in other European countries or whether this is due to the fact that most vendors may well think that since they are developing social software tools for behind the firewall so both privacy and security are not really of a primary concern to them…"

  • How inaccurate! If privacy and security need to be taken into account for any software vendor it is actually essential that those two aspects are being taken well into account if that social software tools suite is meant for internal collaboration. If not, have a wander around in countries like Germany, Austria, Italy, Denmark, France, Spain, etc. etc. where an oversight on these two important topics can be rather costly. For both employers and knowledge workers.
  • So I am hoping that those of us who will be at the Enterprise 2.0 conference will use that opportunity, once again, to challenge, and make rather uncomfortable, those specific vendors who we feel are letting us down not confronting these issues, just because they think organisms like the EU and various other countries are not important enough.

People have always been one of the weak links when it comes to breaches - time and time again. There are technical things that vendors proclaiming themselves as "E2.0" solutions should be doing but that does not remove the need to raise these issues with employees and the responsibilities they have re: communication, information sharing, and collaboration using social tools and applications.

The majority of our readers believe the impact of Facebook-style social networks with elements of file and photo sharing, microblogging or status updates, phlogging (phone blogging), vlogging (video blogging), and instant messaging to name a few applications, will mean the end of the traditional intranet as we know it, but equally see the intranet evolve to incorporate large pockets of social networking.

But the reason we need to change the way we communicate is not just due to technological advancements, the principal driver is human evolution.

  • Pearson, however goes further and believes that the advent of Google Wave, a new communications and collaboration platform that is currently in early testing, as well as social networks being accessible on each other’s platforms, will “accelerate the process of embedding online conversations”.
