So, is it really a question of time? Or is it a communication problem? The biggest paradox of a blog is that it is supposed to be the “voice” of the blogger, yet we are dealing with the written word.

In spite of the apparent informality of a blog, when you are CEO or a high level manager in an organization, it matters what you say and how you say it. People will pay close attention to the words used. Yet, blogs require a personal, spontaneous style in order to be credible to readers."

  • Most of their direct “output” has been invisible to most employees. Today, in the world of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, there’s an expectation for a new style of communication. One that is direct, informal and open.
  • At that point, many senior managers were unable to “express themselves” on these channels.

"What if your employees sat around writing about their personal lives on your company’s internal blog?"

  • Not according to a new academic study by an associate professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business, Anindya Ghose, and two colleagues from Carnegie Mellon, Param Vir Singh and Yan Huang. Along with sharing information about work tasks, blogging at work pulls employees closer to one another, builds relationships, and over time, increases productivity.
  • Especially since a lot of workers were not just blogging about work; they were blogging about non-work concerns as well. At the same time, companies were wrestling with whether to impose rules on how employees used the blogs. Should workers be precluded from chronicling their leisure activities?

In a study last year, Dr Thomas Jackson of Loughborough University, England, found that it takes an average of 64 seconds to recover your train of thought after interruption by email (bit.ly/email2). So people who check their email every five minutes waste 81/2hours a week figuring out what they were doing moments before.

  • surveyed 250 users and discovered that 56% spent more than two hours a day in their inbox (bit.ly/email4). Most felt they got too much email - by January 2008, 38% of respondents received more than 100 emails a day - and that it stopped them from doing other things.
  • The third group, however, reacted negatively to the pressure of email. "That causes stress," says Dr Renaud, "and stress causes all sorts of health problems."

What I found in my last conference call is that most of what we talked about in the call can also be done online, in our community page, when we are not present at the same time (asynchronous).

These are three types of things we did in the conference call, that cover blogs, forums, and wikis:
