Yet when asked if SharePoint was a social network, Koplowitz shook his head and said, "it's a lot better portal than it is a social platform."

"In this post, I want to step back a bit and ask a more existential question: should you even be using SharePoint 2010 for your collaboration platform in the first place?
To answer this, we need first to compare SharePoint to the other options out there for enterprise collaboration, i.e., best-of-breed, purpose-built social computing platforms, like Jive, Lotus Connections or Socialtext. Then, we need to look at what kind of collaboration you’re planning on doing, because that’s really what should drive your decision to use a given tool.

First: The Social Business Imperative
I’m hearing this concept and even this specific phrase more and more.
As far as I know, the phrase “Social Business Imperative” comes from the CEO of Jive Software, Tony Zingale (you can see a great slide deck of his on this topic here). But the idea certainly seems to also underpin any number of Jive competitor products – Moxie Spaces, SocialText, Cisco, Leverage Software, etc., etc. The idea of the social business is gaining attention and software makers are fighting to corner the market on the idea for their own product. So it’s an imperative to them.

"At the Gartner Symposium conference SharePoint 2010 was a key topic. Why? Enterprises have adopted SharePoint even though some acknowledge they don’t quite know what to do with it. Half of Gartner’s clientele has SharePoint installed.
Depending on who you talk to, SharePoint is either a great collaboration tool or a headache. There’s not a lot of in between."

SharePoint doesn’t eliminate the needs for additional social tools and applications because you may not be able to wait three years for a new feature.

If social analytics does become a big deal, SharePoint 2010 lacks the heft to get the job done.

Yesterday I attended the Sharepoint geekfest at The Hilton Sydney. I plonked myself down in the front row, iPad at the ready, to listen to Daniel McPherson (danmc) talk about socialising the business with Sharepoint. His company is ZevenSeas which wins points for having a cool name, I reckon."

BM's Web-based approach is distinctly different than the document-centric world of Sharepoint. It's this Web-oriented, open approach that may prove to be the difference for IBM. We'll have to see. Microsoft remains the major power in the enterprise. Its future is in proprietary systems. But who knows. As the cloud becomes more a part of doing business, Microsoft may continue to have the upper hand, especially if it can execute on its partnerships with third-party application providers.

Putting these tools in-the-flow will be a powerful basis for expanding Enterprise 2.0’s reach. A challenge for standalone general tools of today is that they require employees to toggle between different apps. This can make it tough to get traction.

When I hear about customer’s who have turned their SharePoint my sites into Facebook, Twitter (have you seen the free Tunnelpoint?), or Myspace. I chuckle a little, but when I hear what they’ve done, I realize that it isn’t that much of a stretch.
Those who have deployed their 2007 just like they did their 2001 and their 2003 environment simply by upgrading it, or simply didn’t spend any time figuring out how to take advantage of their features may feel like their environment is FLAT or they are feeling the chaos of a flat environment.
I think this integration and the development of more focused capabilities that sit on top of Wave will be key to its success. As I mentioned earlier, I think that the completely open Wave will get some use as a novelty and even as a collaboration platform. However, it is too open ended for many work applications, as people will not want to recreate the functionality and features. It can potentially serve as a meeting point for applications. On the other hand, people might want to shape application themselves and not be forced to follow the structure of existing applications.

Since Wave may serve as a useful meeting place for applications, it may not replace many but become a useful platform.
