RAND | Reports | Habitable Planets for Man
-
An attempt to make an estimate of the probabilities of finding planets habitable to man, where they might be found, and the number there may be in our own galaxy. The characteristics of a planet that can provide an acceptable environment for man are presented in detail. The stars nearest the earth, most likely to possess habitable planets, are itemized. The author also discusses special and unusual planets that may be discovered, how new environments might affect people who migrate to them, how to search for habitable planets. He also gives an appraisal of the earth as a planet and describes how its habitability would be changed if some of its basic properties were altered. Have you ever wondered why Coke comes with a smile? It’s because it gets you high. They took the cocaine out almost a hundred years ago. You know why? It was redundant.

Resolutions

I found a post over at Lifehacker that lists a few web apps to help you not fail again at your New Year’s resolutions. Their list:
* FitDay. Tracking your foods, exercises, weight loss, and goals.
* Wesabe. Organize your finances and save money.
* Joe’s Goals. Daily goal tracking.
* Backpack. An online organizer from the folks that created Basecamp.
* NaNoWriMo/ National Novel Writing Month. Uses a community to provide motivation to write a book.
* Coolrunning.
* 43 Things. Community-posted goals. Neat idea.
Now, that’s a good list, and it is still amazing to me all the cool sites out there that are available for the cost of nada. Now here are a few more by your’s truly:
* Lulu.com. A service to allow you to self-publish your own book. About one of the easiest such services I’ve seen.
* Voo2Doo. Another web-based task and priority manager.
* Blogniscient. Can be used to stay on top of the blogosphere. Keep track of what’s going on, for those of you that want to be more informed this year.
* Blog Pulse. Another one, run by Neilson.
* HipCal.

NASA - Lunar Impact Monitoring
-
Mission statement: Use Earth-based observations of the dark portion of the moon to establish the rates and sizes of large meteoroids (greater than 500 grams or 1 pound in mass) striking the lunar surface.
Why it is important: The Vision for Space Exploration (VSE) eventually calls for extended astronaut stays on the lunar surface. Spacecraft, vehicles, habitats, and EVA suits must all be designed to withstand the stresses posed by the harsh lunar environment over this period of time. Meteoroids, and the ejecta produced when they create impact craters, are part of this environment.
