Scottish Researchers Revolutionize Wind Turbine Engineering With Minor Tweak

  • The researchers there have developed a system that is simpler to assemble and manufacture, and laid out their suggestion in a paper (pdf) presented at the 2008 European Wind Energy Conference.

Till now; the blades of wind turbines have been connected to a generator via a gearbox. Their technology substituted a “C” shaped core generator (initially in a 20 kW prototype) to test to see if by changing the mechanical structure of the generator they could still maintain rigidity and structural integrity while cutting the weight by more than half.

The design is simply a novel arrangement of the electromagnetically active components: the magnets, steel and copper inside the generator and the copper coils.

World’s largest wind turbines to be made in UK

The three companies receiving government grants are:

* Clipper Windpower: £4.4 million to develop its first prototype 70-metre blade for the Britannia project – the largest wind turbines in the world;
* Artemis Intelligent Power: £1 million to transfer its existing technology from automotive to wind energy; and
* Siemens Wind Power UK: £1.1 million to develop the next-generation power converters for its larger offshore turbine.

Do wind installations need one-to-one backup? No.

[Backup for wind] is a very complex issue. Here are my attempts at (hopefully) simple explanations for why the following four statements are, in all four cases, not really accurate. From a wind power perspective, the four statements amount to the same thing.

STATEMENT: “they (utility) still have to maintain adequate fossil and nuclear capacity for dealing with times without wind.”

Offshore Wind Vital to the Future of Europe

According to the European Commission, Europe’s power plants are getting older and, combined with growing demand for energy, Europe will need 360 GW of energy from new sources in the next 12 years — this is equal to 50% of current energy capacity in the EU. The EWEA thinks that 40 GW of this energy can be produced by offshore wind.

Small Wind Test Findings

Small wind could cost 10 times the cost of residential solar to make the same power.

The energy yield was measured in an average wind speed of 8.5 mph over the year.
Here are the results, translated for the U.S. reader, with the comparative solar costs:

The U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,210 megawatts in Q2 09

The U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,210 megawatts (MW) of new power generating capacity in the second quarter, bringing the total added this year to just over 4,000 MW - an amount larger than the 2,900 MW added in the first six months of 2008, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) said recently in its second quarter (Q2) market report.

Kenya to Have Africa’s Largest Windfarm Built by 2012

Africa’s most ambitious project of renewable energy will be the installation of 365 giant wind turbines around Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. The project will be completed in 2012, when the £533m project will have a capacity of 300MW, a quarter of country’s current capacity.

Wind power study allays risk fears

Increasing the amount of wind energy contributed to the electricity grid will not require large numbers of conventional coal- and gas-fired power plants to be kept on standby, according to a technical report published today. The report, commissioned by environmental groups including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, found that the UK's grid could cope with the variable energy input generated from wind farms.

Siemens to produce wind turbines in China

Siemens is expanding its global manufacturing network for wind turbine plants and is building a new production facility in Lingang New City in Shanghai. By establishing this new rotor blade and nacelle plant, the company is further strengthening its environmental portfolio. This new facility is scheduled to take up operation in the second half of 2010, initially with 400 employees. The wind turbine plants produced in Shanghai will be for the Chinese market and for export.

US Wind in 2009

Building off sharp growth in 2007‐2008, US wind power development in 2009 has been impacted
dramatically by the current economic climate–and US wind players must readjust their strategies
in the wake of this new competitive environment. The US wind power industry finished 2008 at a
record pace with 8,546 MW of new wind plant added, led by Texas, Iowa, New York, Kansas, and
Wyoming. EER forecasts a sharp decline in 2009, but a rebound in 2010 and growth of 12 GW per
year on average from 2010‐2020 to supply nearly 14% of total US power demand.

Wind energy: health, cost, performance

Wind energy: health, cost, performance

I’ve got a two-story series in the Toronto Star that ran this week on wind energy. The first looks at claims that wind farms are causing some people living near them to become sick. The second looks at claims that wind energy costs too much, doesn’t achieve the claimed emission reductions, and simply fails to perform as promised.
