How to catch the Sahara's sun for Europe - New Scientist
-
An ambitious project called Desertec plans to build huge solar power plants in the Sahara desert to feed clean energy to Europe. Political opposition aside, the scheme's backers also face technical hurdles and must decide which of the solar technologies below can deliver on such a scale.
Lithium-Polymer Based Battery System for Solar-Powered Homes
"A Malaysian company called ETI Tech Corporation Bhd has developed the world’s first lithium-polymer battery system for solar-powered homes."
Splitting Water to Store Solar Energy
"MIT professor Daniel Nocera earlier worked on a catalysts that can divide water molecules which can be utilized to store energy. "

How Your Favorite Brands Use Solar Power
Below are the Top 20 Forbes companies and a quick description of how they succeed, or epically fail, for that matter, at incorporating solar power into their business model. And then we’ll complete the top 50 with a few highlights of those companies that excel above their peers. Solar Hall of Shame, here we come…
Google Reveals Plans to Develop More Efficient and Cost-Effective Solar Thermal Technology
As if Google isn’t already doing enough for the world of technology, they’re actually joining the solar technology movement in order to help increase the progress, which they believe has been disappointing to date.
Solar start-up squeezes more juice from silicon cells
The other process, called surface metallization, shrinks the size of the wires, or "fingers," on the front of cells. Instead of using the typical screen printing method, 1366 Technologies engineers have built a machine that's able to make the silver wires using electroplating and to place them on the cell. Shrinking the fingers from the typical 120 microns to 30 microns reduces shading on the cell and allows manufacturers to put more fingers on a cell to improve performance, Sachs said. The company also expects to be able to replace silver with copper to reduce cost, he added.
Evaluating the potential of solar technologies
Evaluating the potential of solar technologies
This interactive offers a snapshot of the leading contenders in solar technology and evaluates the advantages and long-term economic potential of each—as well as the likely challenges ahead.
Cheap and Easy Ways to Use Solar Energy
With escalating power bills and so much talk of renewable energy millions of people are thinking about solar power these days. Harnessing the sun's energy makes sense because it is clean, green, and saves money in the long run. But the reality is that the cost involved with installing panels and collectors is still out of reach for the vast majority of homeowners. Fortunately there are some cheap and easy ways to make the sun work for you.
Taiwan opens doors to global solar market
New legislation that paves the way for renewable energy adoption in Taiwan is poised to create a booming domestic market for solar.
Clean technology venture investment rebounds in 2Q09 after two consecutive quarterly declines
$1.2 billion in venture capital invested in clean technology companies, led by electric vehicles and biofuels, while solar investment hits new low
Solar-thermal technology: The other kind of solar power
Energy: Think of solar power, and you probably think of photovoltaic panels. But there is another way to make electricity from sunlight, which arguably has even brighter prospects
Vacuum Solar Tubes - how they work
The question very often arises as to how evacuated tube solar panels work compared to the flat panel solar option.
Sony Ericsson Says Solar Powered Cell Phones Not So Green
Solar panels are evolving every day - we know that. As long as people invent ways of being independent to the grid, it’s ok, but after a while, they have to be efficient, too. So, for the moment, solar cells in cell phones are like electric cars: they’re nice, the concept is beautifully presented, but figures say they’re not efficient and practical.
Will Grid Parity Change Everything For The Solar Industry?
However, even when true grid parity arrives, it’s unlikely to generate an abrupt rise in solar system installations due to the high upfront costs and the long-term return of investing in a rooftop photovoltaic system, according to iSuppli Corp. In fact, growth is set to moderate during the years when grid parity arrives for various regions of the world as the industry enters a more mature phase.
Utilities with the Most Solar Power are Still Adding the Most
Although the use of solar power is gaining a more diverse following among U.S. electric utilities, the utilities that installed the most solar power in the past continue to lead the nation in installing new solar power capacity.
Top Utilities Grow Solar Power Despite Recession
The report demonstrates that the utility segment is making a major investment to increase the amount of solar energy in power portfolios, with many utilities doubling the amount of solar power in their portfolio in just one year. The installed solar capacity of the top ten ranked utilities rose 25 percent in a tough economy, from 711 megawatts to 882 megawatts.
