German Hybrids Arrive, With Big Engines and Big Price Tags
-
With the ML 450 Hybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, German carmakers have arrived to the hybrid party with keg-sized jugs of expensive stuff. Unfortunately, the most exciting green car party has already moved on to plug-in hybrids and electric cars with much greater potential to reduce fuel use and emissions.

The European Commission, European Parliament and European Council talks in Brussels yesterday have ruled that public buildings will lead the way in improving the energy efficiency of buildings in the region.
The decision makers reached an agreement that will see new or refurbished public buildings having to reach new standards in energy efficiency from the end of 2018.
Most newly constructed buildings will also have to meet the same improved efficiency standards, but only be the end of 2020.
Member States will be responsible for setting their own energy efficiency standards, as the talks concluded that it would be impractical to set levels applicable to all the climate conditions across the region.
The proposals will now go to the European Parliament for endorsement at the beginning of next year.
New European alliance seeks sustainable energy innovations
-
The “European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance” (ESEIA) aims to create innovations for sustainable technologies, establish an interdisciplinary panel of experts, and strengthen measures for further and continuing education.
A new segmentation for electric vehicles
-
Global carmakers are trying to define a future market for electric vehicles. To reach beyond affluent, environmentally conscious, or technically enamored buyers, these companies will need to develop products that satisfy the consumers’ main concern—good value for money. Given the current cost of energy storage, that is a considerable challenge.
A recent McKinsey study suggests that one way companies can achieve this goal would be to focus on tailoring battery-powered vehicles to the actual driving missions of specific consumers—that is, to the way they use their vehicles.
BHP chief says big mining will meet demand
-
Marius Kloppers said the big mining houses had the capacity to meet the world’s rising demand for fuels and ores in the coming decades in a speech where he also sought to downplay fears expressed by industrialising nations over “resources security”.
Electrification Coalition Publishes Roadmap to Promote Advancement of Electric Vehicles
-
More than a dozen business leaders -- including Carlos Ghosn,
President & CEO of Nissan Motor Company; David W. Crane, President
& CEO of NRG Energy; and Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President

not-for-profit organization committed to promoting policies and
actions that
will facilitate the deployment of electric vehicles on a mass scale in
order to combat the economic, environmental, and national security

Privacy and the emerging smart grid: lessons from the Internet
-
“Electric utilities and other providers may have access to information about what customers are using, when they are using it, and what devices are involved. An electricity usage profile could become a source of behavioural information on a granular level,” according to the report,
KGHM 2010 copper production to exceed 502,000 tonnes
-
Polish miner KGHM (KGHM.WA: Quote) Europe's No. 2 copper producer, expects to boost 2010 production above the 502,000 tonnes forecast for this year, its chief executive said on Tuesday.
Construction to start on UK’s marine energy project
-
Construction will start next week on the £42 million Wave Hub marine energy project in South West England.
The Wave Hub, which will be located 10 miles off the north Cornwall coast, will serve as a test bed for wave energy devices by providing an electrical connection from the seabed at a depth of around 50 m to the national grid.
Initially, the Wave Hub will have four berths for wave energy devices up to a maximum capacity of 20 MW, but has the potential to scale up to 50 MW in the future.
Ocean Power Technologies has signed up to take the first berth when it becomes available to test the performance of its PowerBuoy wave energy converter.
The first devices are expected to be deployed in 2011, once the cabling and connectors have been constructed. Starting on Monday, civil engineers will drill ducts from Cornwall coast at Hayle to connect to the subsea cable and a new electricity substation on the site of a former nearby power station.
Cochilco raises 2009 average copper price outlook to $2.30/lb but trims output forecasts
-
Chile's state copper think tank, Cochilco, on Wednesday raised its 2009 average copper price outlook to $2.30 per lb from $1.95, but slightly trimmed its 2009 copper output forecast to 5.38 million tonnes.
The think tank also raised its copper price forecast for 2010 to an average of $2.70 per lb from $2.10 per lb, citing dynamic Chinese demand and expectations of a recovery of developed economies from global crisis.
China may re-export copper stockpiles
-
Copper stockpiles held in duty-free warehouses in China, the top user, may be re-exported after surging to as much as 350,000 tons from almost none at the start of the year, according to Xi'an Maike Metal International Group.
"We can hardly find buyers for refined copper," said Luo Shengzhang, general manager of the copper department at Xi'an Maike. The company ranks among the country's three biggest importers, according to the executive. "China's got to export some copper from now and next year," Luo said in an interview.
