Similarity between Rudd and the Pope's Stance on the Global Financial Crisis [Newspaper Article]

  • How about this - "The so-called outsourcing of production can weaken the company's sense of responsibility towards the stakeholders - namely, the workers, the suppliers, the consumers, the natural environment and broader society - in favour of the shareholders, who are not tied to a specific geographical area and who therefore enjoy extraordinary mobility."

That is an extract from Caritas In Veritate, but it might as well have been a line from Kevin Rudd's Monthly essay, which for the sake of Latin consistency we shall call Ex Articulus Vicis (From Crisis, Opportunity).

In his own encyclical, Rudd observes: "The advocates of neoliberalism have sought, wherever possible, to dismantle all aspects of the social democratic state. The idea of social solidarity, reflected in the collective provision of social goods, is dismissed as statist nonsense … Labour is routinely regarded by neoliberals as no different from any other economic commodity … Neoliberals in government also become notoriously resistant to instances of market failure. Climate change is a potent example."

  • These guys certainly sound like they are singing from the same hymnbook.
