Wi-Fi hotspot extends Clearwire's WiMax service | CTIA show - CNET Reviews

CTIA show
April 1, 2009 : Title ': Wi-Fi hotspot extends Clearwire's WiMax service by Marguerite Reardon"
> > LAS VEGAS - On the eve of the CTIA Wireless 2009 tradeshow here Clearwire has announced a new portable Wi-Fi router that will use Wi-Fi to connect consumer electronics devices, like smartphones and cameras, to its new 4G wireless network.
(Credit: Cradlepoint)
On Tuesday, network operator Clearwire, which is currently building a nationwide WiMax network, announced the Clear Spot, which is made by CradlePoint. The compact device is battery-powered and connects up to eight devices to the Clearwire WiMax network via Wi-Fi. It costs $139 and is expected to go on sale later this month.

Clearwire said the new service will work with most Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones, including the iPhone, some BlackBerry devices, Windows Mobile phones, the T-Mobile G1 and Palm Pre. It will also work with Wi-Fi-enabled gaming and music devices, as well as Wi-Fi ready digital and video cameras.

The purpose of the device is to extend and provide access to Clearwire's WiMax network. Intel has already started manufacturing WiMax chips. And some laptops have the technology embedded in them. Eventually other consumer electronics devices will also get WiMax. But until then, there aren't many devices that can connect to the Clearwire network. By contrast there are millions of devices already in the market that have Wi-Fi. The Clear Spot router allows these Wi-Fi devices to access the Clearwire WiMax network.

6lowpan -- IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Networks

The IETF 6lowpan Working Group aims to define the transport of IPv6 over IEEE 802.15.4 low-power wireless personal area networks.

You can find out more about the IETF WG at http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/6lowpan-charter.html. The mailing list archive is at https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/6lowpan.

This site is about capturing information in a more real-time time scale than that possible through the official IETF web pages. The intention is that we use this as a resource of the WG, not to replace the mailing list or the Internet-drafts archive, but to supplement it for information that is not as transient as E-Mail and not as gellified as an Internet-Draft should be.

AirPort Extreme Base Station Review | Networking | Macworld

AirPort Extreme Base Station
Updated network device remains extremely good at its job
by Scott McNulty, Macworld.com

Think back to the first time you saw a computer accessing the Internet wirelessly. (Yes, kids, there was a time before Wi-Fi). It totally blew your mind, didn’t it? Since then, Wi-Fi base stations have become something of a commodity. The new AirPort Extreme Base Station (2009 edition) might not bring that first thrill of wonder back to Wi-Fi, but it certainly crams an incredible amount of power into a tiny, low-price box.
