While Ford and Dunkin' have some interaction with other Twitter users, Comcast's experience tends to be much more conversational. "It's key to really be a two-way dialogue and from a service perspective it's the best way to approach that," said Frank Eliason, director of digital care for Comcast, who thinks corporate communications people tend to be too focused on getting out a particular message to serve as Twitter brand reps.

I am largely over Twitter. I feel weird when I post something there instead of here. I get a ton more discussion here. - FriendFeed

Steve continues to push to envelope with good thinking on microblogging, and online conversations. FF is built by ex Google folks who built gmail, so they understand well written applications, and scalability.

Hueniverse: Scaling a Microblogging Service - Part I

  • The retrieval system is where things are not as simple. Unlike webmail services where refreshing a user’s inbox only queries a very simple data set (is there anything new in MY inbox?), refreshing a user’s home page on Twitter queries a much more complex data set (are there any new updates in ALL my friends’ pages?) and the nature of the service means that the ratio of reads to writes is significantly different from most other web services.

It was built from the start to scale, which after I met the team I understood why: two of the founders of FriendFeed started Gmail and Google Maps, so I’m sure they’ve learned a few tricks about making sure services don’t go down from Google
