On Sept. 3, the retailer rolled out an HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook computer "packaged" in a messenger bag made from recycled fabric. Walmart touted the product as winner of its Home Entertainment Sustainability Challenge, an effort that began in May 2007 when the chain asked 30 electronics suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of their products through innovative packaging and product design.
By using a functional bag rather than disposable foam, cardboard or plastic materials, the concept lets HP boast of a 97% reduction in packaging waste. The $798 SKU rolled out to nearly 1,700 Walmart stores and all Sam's Club locations, according to a company press release.
