7 Things You Should Know About Social Bookmarking | EDUCAUSE
"Social bookmarking involves saving bookmarks one would normally make in a Web browser to a public Web site and "tagging" them with keywords. The community-driven, keyword-based classifications, known as "folksonomies," may change how we store and find information online"
7 Things You Should Know About YouTube | EDUCAUSE
YouTube is a video-sharing service that allows users to post personally developed videos of nearly any variety online, from animations to personal recordings. YouTube is one of an emerging class of social applications that allows users to share and form communities around their content. It draws users into engaging content as commentators and creators, activities that heighten students' visual literacy.
7 Things You Should Know About Facebook II | EDUCAUSE
"Since ELI's first brief on Facebook (http://www.educause.edu/LibraryDetailPage/666?ID=ELI7017), the social networking site originally developed for college and university students has become available to anyone. It now offers new ways of organizing social networks as well as extensive new features and access to other Web applications. Users can now manage online identities and engage other users much more easily. They also enjoy privacy policies that give them unprecedented control over how their personal information is handled on the site."
7 Things You Should Know About Flickr | EDUCAUSE
"Flickr is a photo-sharing website where anyone can upload and tag photos, browse others' photos, and add comments and annotations. Users can create photo sets and collections to manage content and participate in topical groups to cultivate a sense of community. Although Flickr is ostensibly for photos, the site might more aptly be described as a venue for sharing experiences and building relationships. The site provides the tools, but the value derives from the contributions of the user community -- photos, comments, ratings, and organization -- and the connections that the site facilitates between individuals. In this way, Flickr embodies what has come to be known as Web 2.0 technology."
7 Things You Should Know About Ning | EDUCAUSE
"Ning is an online service that allows users to create their own social networks and join and participate in other networks. No technical skill is required to set up a social network, and there are no limits to the number of networks a user can join. Users of Ning social networks have access to functionality similar to that of more well-known social networks, such as Facebook and MySpace. Various features allow users to read news or learn about related events, join groups, read and comment on blog entries, view photos and videos, and other activities as set up by the network creator. RSS feeds let users subscribe to updates from specific parts of the social network."
7 Things You Should Know About Zotero | EDUCAUSE
"Zotero is a research tool, developed by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, that provides users with automated access to bibliographic information for online resources. Zotero “senses” bibliographic information contained in a web page and—when the user clicks an icon—gathers that information and places it in the user’s library of sources, where users can manage and search those sources. By automating the tasks of gathering, managing, and citing online references, Zotero facilitates a more efficient research process."
7 things you should know about… Ning
With Ning, users have the freedom to channel this creative energy into designing and building a social network that looks and behaves exactly as its creator believes it should. 7 things you should know about… Facebook
With the changes it has instituted, Facebook has redefined what "social networking" is all about. In a sense, Facebook has grown beyond social networking into a new kind of portal, giving users broad control over what they see and how they see it. The application is still fundamentally about relationships and the always-changing networks among individuals, but these relationships are increasingly based on professional interests, political activities, and other connections that are not strictly social. The means of communication-e-mail, cell phones, instant messaging-have proliferated to the point of saturation. Facebook lets people assert control over this flood of communication.
7 things you should know about… Facebook
Activities like social bookmarking give users the opportunity to express differing perspectives on information and resources through informal organizational structures. This process allows\nlike-minded individuals to find one another and create new communities of users that continue to influence the ongoing evolution of folksonomies and common tags for resources. Using a folksonomy-\nbased tool for research lets you take advantage of the\ninsights of other users to find information related to the topic you\nare researching, even in areas that aren't obviously connected to the primary topic. If you are looking for information about sailing, for example, you might find that other users saw a connection\nbetween sailing and boat repair, taking you in new, potentially valuable directions. These kinds of tools also encourage users to keep coming back because the folksonomy and the collections of resources are constantly changing. It's easy to imagine assigning a value for individual resources, resulting in a ranking system that functions as a collaborative filter.
