Learning to Learn
Learning to learn is a fantastic online article by Mark McCrindle exploring Generation Y, their beliefs, values, and experiences. The article aims to describe the contextual impacts on Gen Y and how this changes the way the need to be taught, and in turn how we need to teach. I believe this is a very informative article that reiterates the importance of understanding our students and being aware of the impacts of our modern world on our students.
Primary Resources
Primary resources is a great teaching resource that provides teachers with lesson ideas, games and resources for all key learning areas. The site is a collaborative collection of ideas from other teachers and is updated regularly. The site also has interactive online forums that may be useful for teachers to conference and share ideas with others. The website also has sections relating to other classroom issues such as behaviour and provides classroom management plans, certificates, students aids, target sheets and checklists. A great teacher resource for all key learning areas.
Prezi
Prezi is a great resource for teachers in creating fun and engaging presentations to capture the imagination of students. The single slide layout of Prezi enables smooth and coherent flow from feature to feature and allows the creator endless possibilities in the creation of their Prezi. Through using Prezi I have found that the different layout and aesthetically pleasing frames, text and toolbar excited me about using Prezi in the classroom. I was amazed at how easy it was to use and how quickly a presentation could be put together. I would recommend this site for use by both teachers and upper middle years students.
iTunes
The Apple website is a great teaching resource as it provides links to enable iTunes downloads that create 100's of teaching opportunities through music, video and applications. Not only do these programs show technology and ICT integration in the classroom, the also relate to children's popular culture and relate to them on a level they understand and are excited about. I believe that through utilising programs such as iTunes teachers are connected with modern technologies and are able to better understand the technological world of their students. Also be aware that iTunes doesn't have to be used in conjunction with iPods or iPhones, music and videos can be burnt onto disc, played on the computer or saved onto usb. A teaching resource I couldn't live without!
World Almanac for Kids
This website is a great research resource for kids. It has a wide range of topics covered from animals to sports and science. It's Technology section in particular holds great information for students to look at inventions, computers, inventors and transport. I really like that this website has new and up to date information as well, with articles relating to Apple Mac computers, Microsoft and searching the internet. A great teaching and learning resource for kids to independently source great technology information.
Eduscapes
Eduscapes, is a great teaching resource for teachers. It lists websites that can be used in the classroom to encourage active engagement in learning experiences involoving technology websites. The site serves as a resource bank linking with other useful websites providing information on general areas of teaching as well as specific key learning areas.
Internet 4 Classrooms
Internet for classrooms is a useful resource for teachers as it provides resources and lesson plans aimed at encouraging technology integration in the classroom. The website also has a range of rubric and other assessment templates to assist in developing assessment when planning. In the technology area of the site there are also links to more resources that can be used to explore technology ideas to use in the classroom.
Education World
Education-World has a great section for Technology integration. The site aims to encourage teachers to integrate technology in the classroom and show how easy it can be. It includes 20 activities and nearly 50 websites to further assist teachers to research and plan fun and engaging technology learning experiences. A great site to use when researching and brainstorming ways to link technology with other key learning areas in the classroom.
Technology Design Challenges
This site is great for formulating ideas for design challenges that can be implemented in the classroom. Not only does it provide examples for design challenges for years 1-7, it also lists the outcomes for technology education and provides ideas for evaluation. Cross curricular links are also listed on the site, which is extremely helpful when constructing unit plans. Overall I believe the site is a great resource for technology teachers as it provides innovative and engaging design challenges and clearly states outcomes and learning objectives that may help teachers when planning.
Scribbly Gum
Scribbly Gum is a website devoted to celebrating and exploring nature and provides information on current issues such as climate change and global warming. The website also has an interactive forum where students are able to post their views and opinions on current issues regarding nature and view the thoughts of young people within the community. I believe this could be a great way of not only incorporating and promoting technology in the classroom, but also promoting awareness of current and pressing environmental issues.
Encyclopedia Kids
This website is a valuable teaching tool especially for research activities for students. The site is a child friendly encyclopaedia website that also provides an online dictionary and thesaurus. The site is easy to navigate and boasts over 40, 000 websites in its search function. It also has 14 separate search categories to assist children in exploring different areas of the site.
Minneapolis Public Schools
This site provides lists of different ways of using formative and summative assessment. This is a useful teaching resource as teachers can explore and source new assessment methods that are challenging, engaging and cater to all learning types and levels. This is particularly important in the planning phase of teaching, such as constructing unit and lesson plans
I love that teaching idea!
This website is a collaboration of teachers ideas on all areas of school life, such as health, math, field trips, assessment, learning centers, science, art and writing and language. There are some great ideas posted, particularly for field trips and assessment, as these are areas that can often be overlooke for creative re-haul. Using this website allows teachers to conference with each other and share knowledge and resources.
Exploratorium
The Exploratorium gives students and teachers the opportunity to explore and engage with a plethora of information presented through online activities, exhibitions, webcasts and hands on activities. There are a number of categories within the website that provide great information on current issues such as global climate change, 'faultlines' referring to earthquakes and RobotSumo; a robot construction challenge presenting via webcasts. All of these current issues could be used in technology investigations or design challenges, and the range of presentation methods used on the website introduce children to the many ways they can present, explore and engage when conducting \ntheir own research.\n
Art Attack
Art Attack is an amazing creative arts resource that can be used to generate lesson plans. The website has lots of art ideas with step by step instructions as well as a materials list. All activities are easy to complete using cheap and household items and can be adapted to design challenges to be used in the classroom. I believe this site is valuable in relation to technology education as it has art ideas that involve creative thinking, designing and construction. This can be easily linked to technology and may also support technology education through the reiteration of these key learning aspects in technology across other key learning areas.
The Learning Place
The learning place is a very valuable teaching resource as it provides teachers with information on online learning and aims to help teachers understand more about computers, software and other ICT's. The site offers I-support and answers frequently asked questions in regards to The Learning Place's collaborative communication networks such as project rooms, chats, forums and blogs. These online communities enable teachers to share resources, collaborate on learning and teaching experiences and familiarise themselves with emerging ICT's.
Science Kids
Science Kids is a terrific website that provides interesting and useful science facts and experiments that can be conducted by children. Not only is the website great for kids to use it is also an extremely useful resource for teachers as it list lesson plans and experiments for a number of science categories. The science ideas and lesson plans can be easily linked to other key learning areas, especially technology. Through exploring science concepts the site enables you to think creatively and there are many categories on the site that could be used to formulate design challenges.
