Oracle 11g Database New Features

  • 1.2.3.2 Configurable Real-Time Query Apply Lag Limit


    A physical standby database can be open for read-only access while redo apply is active only if the Oracle Active Data Guard option is enabled. This capability is known as real-time query.


    The new STANDBY_MAX_DATA_DELAY session parameter can be used to specify a session-specific apply lag tolerance, measured in seconds, for queries issued by non-administrative users to a physical standby database that is in real-time query mode.


    This capability allows queries to be safely offloaded from the primary database to a physical standby database, because it is possible to detect if the standby database has become unacceptably stale.

  • 1.2.3.3 Integrated Support for Application Failover in a Data Guard Configuration


    Applications connected to a primary database can transparently failover to the new primary database upon an Oracle Data Guard role transition. Integration with Fast Application Notification (FAN) provides fast failover for integrated clients.


    Flexibility and manageability of disaster recovery configurations using Oracle Data Guard is improved.

Latency (engineering) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  • Ping performs no packet processing; it merely sends a response back when it receives a packet (i.e. performs a no-op), thus it is a relatively accurate way of measuring latency.
  • Where precision is important, one-way latency for a link can be more strictly defined as the time from the start of packet transmission to the start of packet reception. The time from the start of packet reception to the end of packet reception is measured separately and called "Serialization Delay". This definition of latency is independent of the link's throughput and the size of the packet, and is the absolute minimum delay possible with that link.

  • Oracle, for instance, comes with the Statspack utility to monitor database performance. In Oracle10g™, Oracle introduced the AWR (Automatic Workload Repository), along with ADDM (Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor) as an extra-cost option to their Enterprise Manager Tool.


    The Statspack report contains a “Top 5 Timed Events” section that is the first place you would look to begin to understand whether or not your database is I/O bound Figure 2).
