When asked what words come to mind when they think about students posting to the Internet, many educators list words like danger and safety.
But with the likes of Robert Nay—who created one of the most downloaded iPad apps of 2011 when he was just 14—and even Justin Bieber—who began his international superstardom as a YouTube sensation—as inspiration, students and teachers alike should know the positives that posting to the Internet can offer.

The most significant goal of this presentation is to provide frameworks for schools, teachers and parents to use in developing a Digital Ethics curriculum alongside other elements of technology integration. By layering common data about use on top of current work on brain science, and adolescent media, we'll offer access points for meaningful engagement of complex teen issues in a quickly evolving digital geography. In particular we are presenting ways to link "non-native users" with digital natives through an exploration and application of ethics. We'll use storytelling, data models, and examples of lesson series, which empower students to engage adults knowledgeably, and equitably in the learning curve that characterizes conversations about behavior online and within social media contexts. At our school, we have seen the incidence of online harassment decline well below national norms while students are increasingly utilizing the tools of informed citizenship, caring for each other online, and resolving conflict in sophisticated ways.

Launch of New Digital Literacy Portal
THINKB4U
Feb. 7, 2012 – Today, on Safer Internet Day, we proudly announce the launch
of a new digital literacy portal, ThinkB4U <http://www.thinkb4u.com/>.
ThinkB4U is a collaboration between Google and expert safety partners Common
Sense Media <http://www.commonsensemedia.org/>,
ConnectSafely<http://connectsafely.com/>,
and the National Consumers League <http://www.nclnet.org/>. Together we
are tackling some of the biggest learning curves thrown at the average user
in a fun and interactive way.
As more of our life happens online, Internet skills are crucial to living
responsibly. What are the skills needed to navigate today’s Internet
society? How can parents and educators teach themselves, their families,
and their communities about important topics like identity protection,
fraud detection, and digital citizenship?
To answer these questions, ThinkB4U combines “choose-your-adventure” style
videos with resources from trusted consumer safety experts. ThinkB4U
follows a family through its daily activities with media use, and examines
the scenarios and outcomes of online decisions. Should Nat send that text?
Should Grandma buy the ukulele from that online seller? You get to decide
the ending.

"I have long thought that there are parallels that can be drawn between Digital and Global Citizenship. In Digital citizenship the core aspects are respect and protecting oneself, others and property. I believe the same basic tenants can be applied to Global citizenship."
