En un reciente artículo, el catedrático de Recursos Energéticos de la Universidad de Barcelona Mariano Marzo recordaba -previa cita del profesor sueco Kjell Aleklett- que un litro de gasolina suministra energía por 10 kilovatios a la hora, cifra equivalente al esfuerzo que habría que hacer para subir con una cuerda 10 coches de 1.200 kilos a la cúspide de la torre Eiffel. Todo ello por un precio de 1,20 euros (gasolina sin plomo 95), poco más o menos lo que cuesta una cola embotellada. Y ¿cuántos refrescos serían necesarios para tener energía suficiente para subir 1.200 coches a lo alto de la torre Eiffel? El mundo consume, dicen los especialistas, 160.000 litros de petróleo por segundo
Lo que sí se admite es que el mercado del "barril de papel" ha adquirido dimensiones impensables hace apenas cinco años. "Entonces", señala Mingarro, "por cada barril físico de crudo se negociaban entre cinco y diez de papel". ¿Y ahora? Nadie se aventura a hacer un cálculo.
Porque lo que sucedió una vez, puede volver a suceder. Entre los traders de las grandes compañías se recuerda lo sucedido en el año 2001 con una pequeña petrolera de Reino Unido, Arcadia, controlada entonces por la japonesa Mitsui. Arcadia, según la denuncia de una compañía rival (Tosco), jugó con éxito durante un mes a marcar, ella sola, el precio del brent. En el póquer, eso se llama jugar con cartas marcadas. ¿Cómo lo hizo? En el mercado over the counter y tomando posiciones que le permitían controlar toda la cadena del valor. El resultado fue que entre el 21 de agosto de 2001 y el 5 de septiembre del mismo año, una sola compañía, supuestamente, controló los precios de uno de los crudos de referencia al margen de cualquier control. El asunto beneficiaba a la compañía, pero perjudicó a toda la cadena de intermediarios en el negocio. Probablemente fue denunciada por ello. Jugó con fuego y se quemó. Como consecuencia del escándalo, Platt's tuvo que cambiar la fórmula para fijar el precio oficial del crudo brent.
