Data includes expenditures for development activities and development coordination, as extracted from the UNDP general ledger, but due to the global nature of the organization and differences in reporting transactions, some inconsistencies may be found. Development activities is a UN system agreed classification that includes costs classified as either programmes or development effectiveness activities, both of which contribute to the effective delivery of development results. This data therefore does not include all expenditures involving funds administered by UNDP. In some cases, negative balances are seen when projects are managed at the award or fund level. Additional data will be published in 2012.

In many American communities, families working in low-wage jobs make insufficient income to live locally given the local cost of living. Recently, in a number of high-cost communities, community organizers and citizens have successfully argued that the prevailing wage offered by the public sector and key businesses should reflect a wage rate required to meet minimum standards of living. Therefore we have developed a living wage calculator to estimate the cost of living in your community or region. The calculator lists typical expenses, the living wage and typical wages for the selected location.

These graphs show the number of Flickr members who have uploaded at least one photo or video with a particular camera on a given day over the last year. The graphs are "normalized", which is a fancy way of saying that they automatically correct for the fact that more people join Flickr each day: the graph moving up or down indicates a change in the camera's popularity relative to all other cameras used by Flickr members. The graphs are only accurate to the extent that we can automatically detect the camera used to take the photo or shoot the video (about 2/3rds of the time). That is not usually possible with cameraphones, therefore they are under-represented.

From 1999 to 2003, the number of homeschooled students in the United States increased, as did the homeschooling rate. The increase in the homeschooling rate (from 1.7 percent to 2.2 percent) represents about 0.5 percent of the 2002?03 school-age population and a 29 percent relative increase over the 4-year period. While data from the NHES cannot explain why homeschooling was more prevalent in 2003 than in 1999, it can provide insight into why parents homeschooled their children in 2003.3 Parents may have homeschooled their children for a variety of reasons, but certain factors appear to have been more influential than others. Nearly two-thirds of homeschooled students had parents who said that their primary reason for homeschooling was either concern about the environment of other schools or a desire to provide religious or moral instruction. Data from NHES can also be used to examine the student, family, and household characteristics of homeschoolers. Upcoming reports will use these data to study the characteristics of homeschoolers, to compare the characteristics of homeschooled students to those of public and private school students, and to see how homeschooling rates may have changed between 1999 and 2003 for different segments of the student popu

College affordability continues to decline in the United States. Of all the performance categories in the Measuring Up report cards, the state results for affordability are the most dismal. Since our previous edition of Measuring Up, the number of states receiving “F” grades increased from 36 to 43. Even after all financial aid is taken into account, students and their families must devote an increasing share of their income and borrow more to pay for a year of college education at almost all public and private two- and four-year campuses. Only the wealthiest of American families are exempted from declining college affordability. Measuring Up 2006 tracks the decline from the early 1990s, a decline that, as reflected in state grades, is even greater than that reported in the 2004 report card.

This web site is an outgrowth of an op-ed piece that I wrote on grade inflation for the Washington Post, "Where All Grades Are Above Average" In the process of writing that article, I collected data on trends in grading from about 30 colleges and universities. I found that grade inflation, while waning beginning in the mid-1970s, resurfaced in the mid-1980s. The rise continued unabated at virtually every school for which data were available. By March 2003, I had collected data on grades from over 80 schools. Then I stopped collecting data until December 2008, when I thought it was a good time for a new assessment. I now have data on average grades from over 230 schools (with a combined enrollment of over two million undergraduate students). I want to thank those that have helped me by either sending information or telling me where I can find it. I especially want to thank Chris Healy and Lee Coursey who, combined, uncovered over 50 web sites with detailed data. Chris Healy has written a research paper with me on the topic of grading at American colleges and universities that we published in 2010; reprints are available here. I also want to thank those that have sent me emails on how to improve my graphics. Additional suggestions are always welcome.

"The research report, The Spaces Between Numbers: Getting International Data on Higher Education Straight, reveals that U.S. graduation rates remain comparable to those of other developed countries despite news stories about our nation losing its global competitiveness because of slipping college graduation rates. The only major difference—the data most commonly highlighted, but rarely understood—is the categorization of graduation rate data. The United States measures its attainment rates by “institution” while other developed nations measure their graduation rates by “system.”"

"These materials have been collected from various places on our website and have been ordered so that you can, in step-by-step fashion, develop the skills needed to conduct common analyses in SPSS. Although SPSS has a very nice point-and-click interface, we suggest that you learn to use SPSS syntax. Almost all procedures and operations in SPSS can be done either via point-and-click or syntax. While using the point-and-click interface may seem easier at first, you will quickly find that it makes documenting what you are doing very difficult. Please see our seminar on SPSS syntax for some tips on ways to ease yourself into using SPSS syntax."

"This paper contains a description and example of how to run t-tests on individual Likert scale questions. Although this is often done in practice, it is NOT a statistically valid technique, since Likert scale questions do not possess a normal probability distribution. It is presented in this paper since it is commonly asked about. A Likert scale measures the extent to which a person agrees or disagrees with the question. The most common scale is 1 to 5. Often the scale will be 1=strongly disagree, 2=disagree, 3=not sure,4=agree, and 5=strongly agree. Since likert scale questions most often range from 1 to 5, optical mark scanning sheet can be used for data entry."

"There seems to be a pervasive notion that "you can prove anything with statistics." This is only true if you use them improperly. In this workshop we'll discuss things that people often overlook in their data analysis, and ways people sometimes "bend the rules" of statistics to support their viewpoint. We will also discuss ways you can make sure your own statistics are clear and accurate. I will include examples from medicine, education, and industry. This paper presents material covered in a workshop at the Third International Applied Statistics in Industry Conference in Dallas, TX, June 5-7, 1995."
