The "Digital Geology of Idaho" systematically divides Idaho geology into individual teaching modules. The modules correspond with a 15-week Geology of Idaho course (Geol 456-556 for 2 credits). The Digital Atlas of Idaho is written at a more accessible level, and is a resource that also contains exercises for K-12 teachers.As of August 2007, all modules are complete and can serve as a source of information, reference, maps and photographs of Idaho geology. Another component of this project was preparation of a new Geologic Map of Idaho by the Idaho Geological Survey. The map on the left is a simplified version of this new geologic map. Each of the modules on this web site contain derivative geologic maps showing specific map units. The new Geologic Map of Idahos is presently under peer review.

The Tinkering Studio is an immersive, active, creative place at the Exploratorium where museum visitors can slow down, become deeply engaged in an investigation of scientific phenomena, and make something—a piece of a collaborative chain reaction, for example—that represents their ideas and aesthetic. In the Tinkering Studio, visitors are invited to explore a curiosity-driven exhibit, chat with a featured artist, or investigate a range of phenomena with staff artists, scientists, educators, and others by participating in a collaborative activity. A large, eclectic assortment of materials, tools, and technologies are provided for people to use as they explore and create. The goal of the Tinkering Studio is to support the creative ideas of museum visitors, external collaborators, and staff. It provides a place where people can explore together in meaningful ways that revolve around visitors’ ideas, questions, and explorations, enabling them to build an evolving understanding of the world.

CAST is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization composed of scientific societies and many individual, student, company, nonprofit, and associate society members. CAST's Board is composed of representatives of the scientific societies, commercial companies, and nonprofit or trade organizations, and a Board of Directors. CAST was established in 1972 as a result of a 1970 meeting sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council. The primary work of CAST is the publication of task force reports, commentary papers, special publications, and issue papers written by scientists from many disciplines. The CAST Board is responsible for the policies and procedures followed in developing, processing, and disseminating the documents produced. These publications and their distribution are fundamental activities that accomplish our mission to assemble, interpret, and communicate credible science-based information regionally, nationally, and internationally to legislators, regulators, policymakers, the media, the private sector, and the public. The wide distribution of CAST publications to nonscientists enhances the education and understanding of the general public. CAST addresses issues of animal sciences, food sciences and agricultural technology, plant and soil sciences, and plant protection sciences with inputs from economists, social scientists, toxicologists or plant pathologists and entomologists, weed scientists, nematologists, and legal experts.

A video course for grades K-12 teachers and school counselors. 42 video modules of varying lengths, course guide, online text and Web site. Exciting developments in the field of neuroscience are leading to a new understanding of how the brain works that is beginning to transform teaching in the classroom. Neuroscience & the Classroom: Making Connections brings together researchers and educators in a dialog about how insights into brain function can be harnessed by teachers for use in their own classrooms to address their own particular challenges. Course components include 42 video segments interwoven with an online text and other useful resources on a comprehensive Web site. The Web also includes interactive simulations of neuroscience research tools, glossary, and course guide for teachers to use all the materials for sustained professional development.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ is widely recognized as the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species. From its small beginning, the IUCN Red List has grown in size and complexity and now plays an increasingly prominent role in guiding conservation activities of governments, NGOs and scientific institutions. The introduction in 1994 of a scientifically rigorous approach to determine risks of extinction that is applicable to all species, has become a world standard. In order to produce the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, the IUCN Species Programme working with the IUCN Survival Commission (SSC) and with members of IUCN draws on and mobilizes a network of scientists and partner organizations working in almost every country in the world, who collectively hold what is likely the most complete scientific knowledge base on the biology and conservation status of species.

Alternatively, the "Career Finder" can be used to generate a customized list of careers especially suited for users' skills and interests. LifeWorks® promotes awareness of the wide variety of occupations in health and medical sciences and the range of opportunities at different education levels. The site complements its factual career data by highlighting true stories of successful people. They illustrate the variety of real-life career pathways, from the carefully planned to the unpredictable.

Bioscience in the 21st Century is a multidisciplinary survey course in which several theme-based topics in bioscience and their social/ethical considerations will be explored. Topics will include infectious diseases, cancer, genome-based medicine, engineered biomedical systems, stem cells, bioinformatics, and many more. Lecturers will include Lehigh University professors from a variety of departments, as well as special guests. Check for weekly postings of lectures, and class resources. This virtual classroom opportunity is funded through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The grant recognizes Lehigh’s innovative approach to preparing students to address emerging issues in modern biology and biomedical research.

CBE—Life Sciences Education (CBE-LSE), a free, online quarterly journal, is published by the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB). The journal was launched in spring 2002 as Cell Biology Education—A Journal of Life Science Education. The ASCB changed the name of the journal in spring 2006 to better reflect the breadth of its readership and the scope of its submissions.

Professor Ellen Bialystok and co-authors reviewed recent studies using behavioural and neuroimaging methods to examine the effects of bilingualism on cognition across the lifespan. Their review builds on earlier evidence of its benefits for children’s cognitive development. The study, published March 29 in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences, revealed some surprising results. The researchers found that bilingualism protects against cognitive decline by boosting cognitive reserve and delaying the onset of dementia symptoms. The review also suggests that the increasing diversity in world populations may have an unexpected positive impact on the resiliency of the adult brain.
