Misperceptions, the Media and the Iraq War - World Public Opinion

An in-depth analysis of a series of polls conducted June through September found 48% incorrectly believed that evidence of links between Iraq and al Qaeda have been found, 22% that weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq, and 25% that world public opinion favored the US going to war with Iraq. Overall 60% had at least one of these three misperceptions.

Center for the Study of the Public Domain

The public domain is the realm of material—ideas, images, sounds, discoveries, facts, texts—that is unprotected by intellectual property rights and free for all to use or build upon. Our economy, culture and technology depend on a delicate balance between that which is, and is not, protected by exclusive intellectual property rights. Both the incentives provided by intellectual property and the freedom provided by the public domain are crucial to the balance. But most contemporary attention has gone to the realm of the protected. The Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke Law School is the first university center in the world devoted to the other side of the picture.  Founded in September of 2002, as part of the school's wider intellectual property program, its mission is to promote research and scholarship on the contributions of the public domain to speech, culture, science and innovation, to promote debate about the balance needed in our intellectual property system and to translate academic research into public policy solutions. The Center's Faculty Co-Directors are James Boyle, David Lange, Arti Rai and Jerome Reichman. Its Director is Jennifer Jenkins. The Center is supported in its operation by a generous founding gift and by grants from foundations.

The Ties That Bind - Science News

"That’s the conclusion of Cacioppo’s recent work with James Fowler, a University of California, San Diego political scientist, and Nicholas Christakis, a sociologist and physician at Harvard Medical School. Fowler and Christakis have made names for themselves studying how unlikely contagions — such as obesity and happiness — spread in social networks. The trio’s study of how lonely people pass on their pain highlights an emerging area of research, which some call computational social science. The field uses new data collection and analytical techniques to understand how people are connected in networks and how influences move through social links. In some cases, the effects that people have on those they know can be startling."

Forget Gen Y: Gen X is Making Real Change - ReadWriteEnterprise

"A new Forrester survey of 2,000 information workers has revealed that despite the hype, it's not Gen Y that's getting business to adopt collaborative technology. Gen X, those who are 30-43, are the ones leading the charge for social computing. Forrester's analysis is that despite their different view of technology, Gen Y, Millennials, or whatever you want to call those 29 and under, don't yet have the clout within organizations to make real change. The same Gen X employees who are the fastest growing demographic in Facebook are the ones getting management to accept new technology as more than a fad."

Ed/ITLib DL → Leadership Development in Computer-Mediated Distance Education

There has been increasing number of research studies that were conducted to find the effectiveness of the Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) as a tool for many distance education courses. The areas of the previous studies that compared the effectiveness of the CMC to that of the traditional classroom settings include, the grade received; participation frequency; perceived knowledge gained; overall satisfaction with the courses; and level of group collaboration. However, studies dealing with leadership development in CMC settings are scarce. This study investigated the development of leadership and the qualities that learners thought are important in deciding leaders in a CMC course. The study indicates that as in traditional settings, leadership in CMC course changed from topic to topic, but development of a leadership in CMC discussion was not critical for learning to occur. The qualities that were most important in deciding leaders were frequency and quality of postings.
