A teacher's "value-added" is defined as the average test-score gain for his or her students, adjusted for differences across classrooms in student characteristics (such as their previous scores). Is teacher value-added a good measure of teacher quality?

Students who are aware that their work will be checked by plagiarism-detection software are just as likely to cheat as those who are not, a study suggests. Turnitin software, which is used by thousands of universities worldwide, extracts text from submitted essays and checks it against other sources, such as online documents. However, the study conducted by a researcher at California State University suggests that such measures should not be regarded as a "silver bullet" in the battle against "deviant" academic practices. Robert J. Youmans, a cognitive psychologist, says in the paper published in the journal Studies in Higher Education that he expected to find that fewer students would cheat if they were warned that their work would be scanned. This proved not to be the case.

Facebook user “joe1915” writes wall posts that would be familiar to any college student these days: He stresses about tests, roots for his university’s football team, and shows off photos from campus dances. But Joe McDonald isn’t an average smartphone-toting student. He died in 1971 — 33 years before Facebook arrived on the Web.

Back in 2010 our school district rolled out Google Apps for Education for our staff and students. Since then we have seen great usage of Google Docs for the creation of word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. However, along with that growth in usage, we have also received a common question: “Is it really a good idea for a school to encourage the use of Google Docs instead of Microsoft Office?”

Are educational iPad apps valuable for learning? Until recently, no studies had put iPad learning apps to the test. This month GameDesk released a study led by USC Prof. Michelle Riconscente on Motion Math, an iPad fractions app for elementary-school aged children. The study evaluated whether playing Motion Math led to increases in children’s fractions knowledge and attitudes. Over 120 participants played the game for 20 minutes daily for five days, for a total of 1 hour and forty minutes of game play. Among the main findings were that fractions knowledge increased an average of 15%, and participants gained confidence in their fractions ability and reported liking fractions more after playing the game. Changes on all outcome variables were statistically significant compared to a control group.

I hesitate when I hear vendors sponsoring academic research: "In a landmark study, a USC professor studied 122 fifth-graders from two schools and four math classes to assess the effectiveness of an iPad app for improving students’ fractions knowledge and attitudes. The study is the first to document learning and motivation gains achieved through iPad game play. ... 5th graders fractions test scores improved 15% after playing Motion Math, for 20 minutes over 5 days. This was a significant increase compared to the control group. Students’ attitudes and confidence towards fractions improved an average of 10%. Virtually all students rated the game as fun and that it helped them learn."

The goal of this site is to provide all the necessary tools for students to conduct research and to present their findings. Site provides a Quick Click to Search Engines, annotated Research, Writing, and Style Guides (MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian, CGOS, CBE, Harvard), and Worlds of Knowledge housing some of the best education Web sites in a Virtual Library arranged by the Dewey Decimal Classification System. The DDC was created by Melvil Dewey in 1873 and was first published in 1876. Web sites in this virtual library are organized somewhat loosely by subject according to recent editions of the DDC. The site also provides guidelines on: How to write an A+ research paper, How to effectively deliver a presentation, How to format a research or term paper, How to quote passages, How not to plagiarize, How to write Footnotes and Endnotes with examples on writing First Footnotes and Endnotes in MLA Style plus a Footnotes Sample Page and an Endnotes Sample Page.

Humble leaders who were young, nonwhite or female were reported as having to constantly prove their competence to followers, making their humble behaviors both more expected and less valued. However, humble leaders who were experienced white males were reported as reaping large benefits from humbly admitting mistakes, praising followers and trying to learn. In contrast, female leaders often feel they are expected to show more humility than their male counterparts, but then they have their competence called into question when they do show humility. "Our results suggest that female leaders often experience a 'double bind,'" Owens says. "They are expected to be strong leaders and humble females at the same time." Owens and Hekman offer straightforward advice to leaders. You can't fake humility. You either genuinely want to grow and develop, or you don't, and followers pick up on this.

The ECAR study of undergraduate students and information technology sheds lights on how information technology affects the college experience. ECAR has conducted this annual study since 2004, and though students' ownership and utilization of technology changes from year to year, students consistently rely upon their instructors and institutions to meet their technology expectations and needs. The 2011 study differs from past studies in that the questionnaire was reengineered and responses were gathered from a nationally representative sample of 3,000 students in 1,179 colleges and universities.

Researchers at the University College London have found a connection between the number of Facebook friends a person has and the amount of “grey matter” in the amygdala, the sulcus, the left middle temporal gyrus, the right entorhinal cortex, and the superior temporal sulcus. “Grey matter” in the brain is the layer where mental processing takes place. While the study uses Facebook as an example, the results point to the impacts the Internet and social networking may be having on our brains.

A new research project by the Open University explores the much-debated concept of “the digital native”. The university does this by making full use of the rich resource which is its own highly diverse student body. It concludes that while there are clear differences between older people and younger in their use of technology, there’s no evidence of a clear break between two separate populations.

With the innovative browser game concept “Power of Research” young people can for the first time assume the role of a researcher and experience the everyday life of an active scientist. The purpose is to provide an entertaining insight into the world of bioscience and to arouse an interest in research. In the coming years an attractive platform based on this strategic computer game will evolve using the state of the art technologies. This platform is aimed at the online European community with a focus on science communication. The development of this game is supported within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union. The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) also honored the project for its excellent success as an “Austrian Champion in European Research”. For realisation of “Power of Research” the very latest dynamic technologies were developed, including the “Soft Body Physics Engine”. The teaser provides the first impression for the future players."

"With the rapid growth worldwide of teaching and learning on the Internet, more and more attention is being paid to the nature and quality of online higher education. This report, commissioned by the National Education Association, the nation's largest professional association of higher education faculty, and Blackboard Inc., a leading Internet education company, examines case studies of six colleges and universities that provide Internet-based degree programs. The case studies were designed to ascertain the degree to which various measures of quality identified in previous studies are actually being incorporated into the policies, procedures, and practices of institutions that are distance education leaders. The final outcome is a list of 24 benchmarks that are essential to ensure quality in Internet-based distance education. These benchmarks may assist policymakers, faculty, students, and others in making reasonable and informed judgments with regard to the quality of Internet-based distance education."
