On Monday, Blackboard officials announced that the company has purchased two leading supporters of Moodle, Moodlerooms and NetSpot. Both deals are complete, though officials would not disclose the sale prices. The company also hired one of the founders of the Sakai project to lead its efforts to support colleges using that open-source software. The moves are part of the company’s newly announced Blackboard Education Open Source Services group.

"The largest growth of open source in schools has been the adoption of an increasing number of Web 2.0 applications. Most of these are hosted on Linux servers, running Apache and PHP. While most educators are unaware of this growing trend that does not stop them from using these resources. Financial constraints which have effected nearly every school have driven educators and those charged with supporting education in the direction of open source. In the recent past K-12 schools and colleges used proprietary learning management solutions. Eager for a cost effective solution and one that can be easily tailored to each entity’s particular needs has caused many teachers and administrators to look at Moodle. Schools that adopt Moodle as an LMS need only provide hosting or contract for it and the necessary staff development for teachers and students. Moodle can be used in school or at home on any of a variety of platforms including Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Android and iPad, iPod and iPhone devices. With the growing popularity of Moodle, each year has seen NYSCATE members presenting on how they use the open source learning management system. The strength of Moodle is evidenced by the number of vendors on the display floor who found it necessary to compare themselves to Moodle. Also, at this year’s conference I noticed an absence of Blackboard and Angel, who had booths at previous conferences. I wondered if that was due to the increasing penetration of Moodle into the the public school enterprise."

This research investigated Irish Small to Medium Sized Educational Institutions (SMSEs) involved in Higher Education (HE) that adopted Moodle, the OSS (Open Source Software) course management system (CMS). As Moodle has only been adopted in the Irish HE sector in the last 5-7 years, this research crucially studied the attitudes of the SMSEs that have invested in it to uncover the influencing factors (lessons learned, rationale) concerning OSS adoption in HE from the view point of the smaller colleges. A full population of Small and Medium Sized Educational Institutions, large colleges and universities in HE operating in Ireland that utilize Moodle were included in this research. A variety of Open Source Moodle service providers (large and small) operating in Ireland were also included in this research. This research found a high degree of improved confidence in additional Open Source core system adoption and integration in SMSEs resulting from Moodle adoption. This confidence has been a direct result of the Moodle experience and the supportive community that has been found to encapsulate it. The Moodle experience in Ireland has, without doubt, challenged traditional preconceptions and fears concerning core OSS adoption. In addition, proactive SMSEs have benefited greatly in Moodle assistance from other colleges, particularly the universities. Quality external Moodle support service has been viewed very positively. This research also suggests that%

Here are a couple of ideas for what you can do with Moodle’s webpage, which are generally blank canvases in your classroom that might be under utilized. By knowing how to toggle the plain text view in any html editor you too can embed some of these great little tools.

Unlike Elluminate and Wimba, BigBlueButton will require some technical expertise to set up a server to run the software. You can however check it out at their demo site [http://demo.bigbluebutton.org/]. From a cursory review I can say that the software opened seamlessly, without any trouble on my laptop (which is running Linux Ubuntu and Chrome browser). It’s very slick and could certainly mean a new page for synchronous, open source educational tools that integrate into Moodle. Did I mention that there’s already a Moodle plugin? The Moodle Quiz Mobile app was created by Yulia Ivanova and her team who also created the Moodle XML Converter (available at http://vletools.com/). A very specific, functional app for your web-enabled Mobile phone/device, the http://m.vletools.com/login site helps you login to any Moodle and access the quizzes and pages you need. Check out the screenshots below for a demo (done via browser, not phone).
Very simple layout and really easy to use.

The following list of Moodle site examples was created by the NHDOE Office of Educational Technology (www.nheon.org/oet) as a resource for schools considering the use of Moodle. All of these sites came from the main Moodle directory of sites at http://www.moodle.org/sites/. This list is not meant to be all-inclusive, nor was it compiled in any systematic or scientific manner. It is simply a list with notes about site features as they were viewed online during the month of July 2006.

In Moodle, the theme determines the colors, beads and font styles that your site uses. To choose a theme, select Site Administration | Appearance | Themes | Theme selector. The choices you see there are standard themes that come with Moodle. On your server, you will find the files for these themes in /theme. Compare the theme names available in the Themes page with the directories you see on the server
