You know how Apple stuff just works? It’s totally true. But you’ll still need to spend a surprising amount of time explaining how the iPod works. Even intuitive stuff needs to be taught. The idea that all students are net-savvy millennials is a pernicious myth. It’s disabling for students and for faculty, who often feel overwhelmed by their students’ ability to give zombies a cupcake on Facebook, and decide they don’t have anything to contribute. (Not y’all. I know that Prof. Hacker’s readers try to raise their students to the light. But less technically confident professors?

"Skype is in use by numerous users all over the world and across almost all platforms. After all, what could be more fascinating than making free phone and video calls? Although Skype has a truckload of functionalities, call recording isn’t one of them. Maybe it’s for ethical reasons, but in some situations you really do need to record a call (for example if your aunt is giving you her special pizza recipe), and for those situations, QuickVoice is what you need."

"With a furrowed brow and a deep breath, Dallis Engel pressed down on the screen of her iPod touch. Then, she began to read. "My brother William is a fisherman," she said, using a finger to trace words in Patricia MacLachlan's book, "Sarah, Plain and Tall." The 9-year-old stumbled over pronunciations and skipped words as an application recorded her voice. When she finished the passage, she glanced over at her teacher, Kelly Turcotte, and explained her next step. "I have to listen to it and make sure it's perfect," she said. "If you sound like a robot, you have to do it again." In the Canby School District, it's a familiar scene. While schools in the nearby North Clackamas School District and others across the nation have banned personal cellular phones or mobile Internet devices, Engel's fourth-grade classroom at Philander Lee Elementary is fully embracing wireless technology."

"Green Bay-area school districts are beginning to change long-standing bans on handheld technology, such as cell phones and iPods, after realizing they are increasingly part of students' everyday lives. The Pulaski School District, for example, now encourages middle and high school students to bring their cell phones to class. They're also welcome to carry other electronic gadgets such as netbooks, which are a bit smaller than laptop computers; iPads, handheld tablet computers; or electronic-book readers. Pulaski school leaders said they decided to drop a ban on cell phone use because it wasn't practical. Students own the gadgets, administrators say, so why not use them as classroom tools? The school allows students to use cell phones for personal use outside of classroom time; teachers guide use of handheld devices when class is in session. "If you give kids an opportunity to use phones they take responsibility and they're not trying to use them when they aren't supposed to," said Pulaski High School co-principal Daniel Slowey. "This way they can communicate with their parents for rides or whatever they need to do.""

"Putting learning technology into the hands of students via mobile devices is a growing trend for schools as they look to personalize and individualize learning for students. Using Apple's innovative iPod Touches creates a handheld computing environment for students, teachers and administrators to personalize and share learning as well as to decrease costs of technology implementation across a school."

"I noticed that the Other (orange) section of the Capacity gauge in iTunes was huge -- basically all the remaining space was used up by Other. Switching to the Finder, I quickly scanned through the iPod's various folders (it was set to enable disk use) with the Inspector open (Command-Option-I), and they all looked normal in size ... until I got to Photos » Thumbs. This one was over 20GB! Given my entire iPhoto library (at native resolution) is all of 45GB, I figured there was something wrong. The fix? I first disabled photo sync in iTunes, then trashed the contents of the Thumbs folder in the Finder, and emptied the trash. Once that was done, I re-enabled photo syncing, and let the iPod sync all the photos back. When it was done, I once again had all my photos on the iPod and 20GB+ of free space on the device, and the Other section showed only 1.7GB used. I have no idea what happened to the Thumbs folder, but if you find yourself with a similarly-overflowing iPod for no apparent reason, it's possible this folder is the culprit on your device as well. "To think, it's been over five years since we last tackled how to get music off your iPod, as opposed to the other way around. Back then, the classic model had only recently added the infamous click wheel (while still rocking the monochrome screen, mind you), iPod nano was still called the mini, and viewing photos was a brand new feature worthy of having its own line. It's time to take another look at how to transfer media of all sorts -- audio, video, and pictures -- from a variety of iPods and iPhones back to your Windows or Mac OS X machine. "

"SwitchEasy's ThumbTacks are far from being the first third-party microphones designed to function nicely with Apple's iPod nano 4G and second-generation iPod touch, but we'll be darned if they aren't the cutest. Clearly designed to mimic the iconic thumb tack, these itty-bitty microphones function with all third-party voice applications and can be selected in black, white or red."
