Five cloud computing myths exploded - at ZDNet.co.uk

  • cloud computing is a form of outsourcing by which vendors supply computing services to lots of customers over the internet
  • The services are provided by massively scalable datacentres running hundreds of thousands of CPUs as a single compute engine, using virtualisation technology. That approach means workloads are distributed across multiple machines — which can also be located in multiple datacentres — and capacity can be allocated or scaled back according to a customer's needs.

Lots of interesting things in here. Who knew Google had a virtual environment called Lively? Interesting to see an overall impression of virtual 'worlds' (described as a controversial term) failing as virtual 'life' envronments contrasted with successful uses as virtual learning environments

  • Second Life may get much less press attention than it used to - Reuters has withdrawn its much-trumpeted Second Life correspondent - but it is still being used by many people as a space for socialising, experimentation and, of course, cartoon-like sexual encounters.

  • Second Life and World of Warcraft are not really "worlds", whatever their proponents might claim.

    They are sophisticated 3-D environments that allow for a much greater degree of engagement than other tools, and they offer tools for interaction and creative expression that browsers, chatrooms and e-mail do not. However, the grandiose terminology makes it too easy to dismiss their importance.

    The organisers of ReLIVE08 seem to realise this. In her paper, Ms Robbins-Bell talked about virtual worlds, but the conference as a whole was concerned with "Researching Learning in Virtual Environments", a broader and far less confrontational term.

Internet2 Identity and Access Management model

Good framework model for setting IAM in context in HE. Use this along with maturity model and scoping to set the IAM context for the business definition. However whilst I think acl groups should be centrally managed and provided via appropriate directories I am not sure that every privilege will be applied here. I am not sure we can, or it is ideal to capture every privilege in the centre? Although they should probably be documented e.g. this acl group is used to control this privilege in this system etc.

Study on Identity management for lifelong learning in UK higher and further education : JISC

This study is to describe current practices and envision future processes in identity management for lifelong learning in UK higher and further education. The work will explore identity management issues within the context of lifelong learning, which inevitably involves learners moving into and out of education, combining it with work, and having links with a number of different institutions.
