.1 Executive Summary (Publisher Interface Study)

  • When it comes to improving the end user experience of discovery; users consistently indicate one major desire - consistency. An end user study showed that they generally do not understand any of the terminology used, and have no wish to - they simply want the terminology and design to be similar across all sites so that they can learn what to look for.
  • Recommendation 1 - A brand should be created for academic federated access. For this brand to be successful, it needs widespread adoption worldwide. The brand should include a short name and a logo; these need not mean anything but simply provide a familiar point of reference.

Publisher Interface Study (Publisher Interface Study)

  • he federated access approach has been successfully adopted in many different countries throughout the world, but this success has brought with it usability issues known as 'the discovery problem'.  Any user approaching a Service Provider without following a directed link needs to be able to tell the Service Provider both which access management federation / country they are from, and which organisation they are affiliated too.  Despite some excellent Service Provider developments to help address this issue,  the overall approach has lead to many different variations in approach and a confusing experience for users.

  • Users will have a single sign-on using an institutional ID and password for a wide range of resources, as well as the assurance that their personal data will not be disclosed to third parties.Librarians will be free of the burden of user name and password administration, and will have new tools for managing licenses and service subscriptions.IT managers will have more control over the access management process through enhancements to enterprise directories, although this will require additional institutional effort in the short term.Institutions will have a single service to meet the requirements of e-learning, e-research and library-managed resources. Simplification of the authentication process has also proven to lead to increased use of subscribed services.
