A unique identifier unambiguously identifies an item within
a repository; the unique identifier is used in OAI-PMH requests for extracting
metadata from the item

- Unique identifiers play two roles in the protocol:
- Response: Identifiers are returned by both the
  ListIdentifiers and
  ListRecords
  requests.
- Request: An identifier, in combination with a
  metadataPrefix,
  is used in the GetRecord
  request as a means of requesting a record
  in a specific metadata format from an item.
- The nature of a resource identifier is outside the scope
  of the OAI-PMH. To facilitate access to the resource associated with
  harvested metadata, repositories should use an element in metadata
  records to establish a linkage between the record (and the identifier of its
  item) and the identifier (URL, URN, DOI, etc.) of the associated resource. The
  mandatory Dublin Core format provides the identifier element
  that should be used for this purpose.
- A set is an optional construct for grouping items for the purpose
  of selective
  harvesting.

Organizations must choose namespace-identifier values
which correspond to a domain-name that they have registered, and are
committed to maintaining

for identifiers in multiple repositories operated by the same organization

- Resolution: oai-identifiers are intended to serve as
  identifiers for metadata items within repositories. It is not intended
  that oai-identifiers be used outside the context of a set
  of interacting repositories and harvesters
- With knowledge of the repository that an oai-identifier
  was obtained from, it will be possible to obtain the status of the
  item and to disseminate metadata from it

Every metadata record harvested by the OAI-PMH has a
unique
identifier.
The only restriction for conformance is that this identifier should be a URI
that is unique within the respective repository. Data providers may choose,
however, to adopt the
OAI
identifier scheme whereby their identifiers are globally
unique within the oai namespace. The advantage for repositories of adopting this naming convention is that record
identifiers are resolvable via future resolution services. OAI identifiers
are formally defined at http://www.openarchives.org/OAI/2.0/oai-identifier.xsd.
Note: registration of an OAI identifier scheme does not commit you to using
those types of identifiers for all of your records. It only reserves the repository
identifier for your use if you wish.

Note: at this time a repository may only register one namespace identifier.

  Some instances in which you might want to change your registration information
  are:
  
  change of administrator e-mail address
  adoption of the OAI
