Is the online-publishing world ready for sabermetrics?

Even for entirely free sites such as Guardian.co.uk, the aim is to build brand loyalty and long-term engagement through reader participation  members of a community whose user habits can be sold to advertisers, and to whom products and events can be sold.

TechCrunch still has to deal with that, but in the modern era they also have to watch their back, because they have a very touchy psychopath conducting a musical chairs to the death game with them right now.

and yet, in an interview with CNBC, the octagenarian made some comments about paywalls that suggest he misunderstands what the business of content looks like in our digital and hyper-connected age. Yes, that’s right: I am disagreeing with one of the world’s most renowned investors.

Four companies shared their diverse digital models at the Key Executives Mega Conference, a joint meeting of the Inland Press Association, Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and the Local Media Association in San Antonio on Tuesday, and the major takeaway was that even the simplest digital effort was capable of moving the needle.

Jim Giles, who has written for Nature, The Atlantic, The Economist and New Scientist, and Bobbie Johnson, European editor for GigaOm and a previous tech reporter for The Guardian, created the project, which has been named Matter.

The concept here is pretty basic. Demand’s “Social Feed” ads incorporate a, um, “social feed” pop-out. It shows surfers a stream of commentary from and about a brand, via services like Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

The Financial Times is still signing up new digital subscribers, but at the slowest rate since iPad lit up its business model in mid-2010.

The final panel of the day agreed that publishers will have little choice but to monetise digital operations - although there's no one method of getting that right.

“We prefer to call it a digital subscription package,” Kaiser said. “Both ‘pay’ and ‘wall’ are unpleasant words.”

The Huffington Post UK has launched a new 'Inspiration' section on its site which will enable brands "to communicate directly with prospective consumers via video, blogs and social media," announced a press release from AOL.
