E-Learning Graduate Certificate Program: Finding E-Learning Jobs

  • Online teaching was the perfect part-time job for me. E-learning and online teaching replaced coaching and after school clubs as a way to supplement my income. I loved it! I was working with great teachers from around the world and learning new things everyday. I also realized I was opening a door to a new career. Eventually, after 25 years in a traditional classroom, I decided to take early retirement, and pursue my passion for online teaching and learning full time.

  • Our team uses a wiki to document our design and development processes, something I wrote about in a short column for the eLearning Guild’s Learning Solutions magazine. This weekend I was imagining a conversation between two people about the benefits of a wiki. This overlaps quite a bit with the reasons in my article, but it’s a more fun presentation with Xtranormal.

News: The Evidence on Online Education - Inside Higher Ed

Timely information for our group! The learning time issue in particular is an important finding that points to a cost effective way to increase student learning time without tackling the issue of a longer school day head on. We know that more time on meaningful tasks is crucial, but the physical cost of attending a bricks and mortar classrooms is prohibitive.

elearning online learning research

  • WASHINGTON -- Online learning has definite advantages over face-to-face instruction when it comes to teaching and learning, according to a new meta-analysis released Friday by the U.S. Department of Education.

The study found that students who took all or part of their instruction online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through face-to-face instruction. Further, those who took "blended" courses -- those that combine elements of online learning and face-to-face instruction -- appeared to do best of all. That finding could be significant as many colleges report that blended instruction is among the fastest-growing types of enrollment.

  • the positive results appeared consistent (and statistically significant) for all types of higher education, undergraduate and graduate, across a range of disciplines, the study said.

education elearning courses

  • June 29, 2009

WASHINGTON -- Community colleges and high schools would receive federal funds to create free, online courses in a program that is in the final stages of being drafted by the Obama administration.

  • The funds envisioned for open courses -- $50 million a year -- may be small in comparison to the other ideas being discussed. But in proposing that the federal government pay for (and own) courses that would be free for all, as well as setting up a system to assess learning in those courses, and creating a "National Skills College" to coordinate these efforts, the plan could be significant far beyond its dollars.

    • According to Colvin Clark & Mayer (2002) there are six different "broadly applicable" media element guidelines to follow when undertaking e-learning instruction. These guidelines are:

      1. The Multimedia Principle: Use words and graphics rather than words alone.
      2. The Contiguity Principle: Place corresponding words and graphics near each other
      3. The Modality Principle: Present words as audio narration rather than onscreen text.
      4. The Redundancy Principle: Presenting words in both text and audio narration can hurt learning.
      5. The Coherence Principle: Adding interesting material can hurt learning
      6. The Personalization Principle: Use conversational style and virtual coaches.
  • Information can and (should even) be encoded and transmitted using both visual and auditory (narration) channels. If verbal information is encoded auditorily it reduces the cognitive load of the learner. Consequently their working memory can process information more effectively. Mayer has calls this the the Modality Principle.

  • Using game concepts in learning will definitely engage and interest the learner.

Instead of giving lectures and lessons on a subject, try presenting the subject as a problem or an activity to the learner and allow him to solve the problem or participate in the activity. Learning must happen as the learner tries to solve the problem or indulges in the activity.

Universities and the Corporate E-Learning Market « Strategy, Research and Management in Online Higher Education

  • Universities and the Corporate E-Learning Market

In higher education on December 17, 2008 at 10:54 pm
  • Now many of these same schools are rushing to add online training to their corporate market offerings. The transition to the Net, however, may fall short of expectations for both the universities and their clients. Online education – particularly the development of course content – requires certain skills, organizational structures, and operational strategies that are rarely found among traditional universities.  Unlike the corporate sector, and certain parts of the non-profit sector, universities have not adjusted their course development practices to the new demands of online education.
