Ubuntu announces ARM port
This had to happen. I just wonder if any of my PDAs are ARMv7 compatible...
-
Canonical announced it will port Ubuntu Desktop Linux to the ARMv7 architecture. Targeted at netbooks, the Ubuntu ARM distribution could set the stage for Intel to lose the "software advantage" that has enabled x86 to shrug off attacks from other architectures for the last 30 years.

Google's Chrome now works on Linux, crudely | Webware : Cool Web apps for everyone - CNET
Hooray! I would much rather wait for a native application built from the ground up, rather than use a hasty hack that is simply a crude port...

Aaron Boodman, who works on Chrome and Gears and spotlighted the Linux accomplishment, had this explanation in his blog post about the Linux Chrome milestone: "The test shell is a very simple browser that the Chromium development team uses for testing our integration with WebKit," the engine that decodes HTML to render a Web page in the browser. "It is the first step of porting Chromium to a new platform."

I don't believe I have a problem with this... I'm all for unplugging an living along in the remote hills, but if we choose to live as a society I hope there is some data mining going on to help manage things. It's a giant, fluid system. More data that happens to be "true" is always a good thing. Society has often made sharp turns on false rumor (war of the worlds, anyone?). Why not use distributed data that is difficult to spoof?

Children become latest source of renewable energy
According to Karen Cavanagh, CEO of Saber Technical, the New York-based designer and manufacturer of the electrical generating playground systems, the equipment is fitted with alternators and gears which, when activated, are able to generate an electrical charge.
If the children are spinning a merry-go-round that’s intended to pump well water, the spinning motion of the machine will send power into an alternator which then transfers an electric current directly to a sump pump. From there the sump pump pushes the water through underground pipes into a holding tank, which is mounted on top of a tower. The clean water can then be used for drinking, for sanitation purposes or for irrigating arid land.

Mars Lander Succumbs to Winter - NYTimes.com
Mission managers said Monday that they had not heard from the NASA spacecraft for a week and that they thought it had probably fallen quiet for good.
“At this time, we’re pretty convinced that the vehicle is no longer available for us to use,” said Barry Goldstein, the project manager. “We’re actually ceasing operations, declaring an end to mission operations at this point.”
- Thanks for a successful mission! What a great run! - williamlweaver on 2008-11-11
