lickr allows you to not only seperate different tags by spaces, but at the same time, it allows you to make use of tags that are made up of two or more words (space seperated). They do this by requiring multiple word tags to be enclosed inside quotes. This is the tagging concept that Socialmarks is based on.

If you wanted to find pictures of Cameron “Sexiest Man in Web Design” Moll, you’d have to search for cameronmoll, cameron_moll, cameron+moll, cameron-moll, and a variety of other things. No single convention has been developed for dealing with these situations, and even if there were one, enforcing it goes against the fundamental concept of a folksonomy (that it’s intuitive and made up by individual users).
Programmers and developers are accustomed to oddball text separators, but the general public isn’t. As these services become increasingly widespread, more people are going to be puzzled about the odd symbols in the middle of otherwise logical phrases.
It makes future search engine parsing more difficult. I could search for “SXSW Interactive 2005” and never find content tagged as “sxsw_interactive_2005” due to the differing ways in which search engines parse punctuation and white space

I just installed
Cat2tag
a wordpress plugin to add folksonomies to Wordpress. Though I’m not yet a power blogger (i.e. I don’t blog multiple times a day or for that matter multiple times a week), as a power del.icio.us and scuttle user, I can immediately appreciate the value of being able to create
tags
on the fly.

My only gripe is that I would love it if Edmundo could make
tags

comma separated
instead of
space separated
. I like the multi-word categories names without underscores

No matter what we do with tag
s, it will be controversial. I got used
to space-separated tag
s on delicious
and had to adapt to Flock's use
of comma-separated tag
s... but I eventually grew to prefer commas,
since they are explicit and predictable (though our "pills" don't act
entirely predictably just yet).

ging service that got this piece right.

is more familiar to most people and we can be even smarter than that!

Imagine a blog system with a tag field on the blog entry form where you can put in comma separated
or space separated
tags in free form. Just below that is a list of the top 50 tags you've used before. Clicking on one, just copies text into the field. Now you can add old tags with one click and add new ones just by typing them. I've coded this in my custom Drupal installation. Be nice if the mainstream blog tools copied it.

As files are tagged with Labels, they automatically appear in psuedo-folders
that display the name of the Label.
