Excellent article. I'm a psychiatrist myself and I increasingly despair of the medicalisation and individualisation of social problems. Widespread psychological and emotional distress are, at least in part, the symptoms of an underlying social disease, but they manifest themselves in individuals. Those "in power", the wealthy, the successful, the government, have a vested interest in pretending that it is the individual who is ill and requires treatment, and this has been largely accepted by the "patients". "Doctor, I'm depressed" they complain, implying, "there is something wrong with me, give me tablets." Every patient I see says that. No one says, "I am unhappy". That would immediately lead to the question "What are you unhappy about?", with all the revolutionary potential that could unleash.
