The Evolution of Preparing the NIC’s Global Trends 2025 Report
An intersting and informative bit of quick, qualitative, longitudinal analysis here that gives good insight into the changes beginning to take place in the U.S. intelligence community. Ironically, enough, the emerging impacts of new media, information, and communication technologies for intelligence was the topic of the week in the "IT and Global Conflict" course I am teaching at U of U. As such, I forwarded this post to my students.

Coming soon: More attacks on critical infrastructure?
This is very, very interesting. It seems to confirm my admittedly less-than-systematically-developed impressions about the real threat from "cyber attacks"--i.e. that denial of service, defacement, intrusion/theft do not constitute "real war." Based on Dorothy Denning's categories, most of this stuff is at the level of hactivism, not cyberterrorism or cyberwar. Or, maybe it would be more accurate to say that, as military activities, they are forms of PSYOPs or intelligence gathering.

Army Warns of Twitter Dangers
AFP's take on the Army intel report about terrorist use of cell phones, GPS, and yes, Twitter. AFP cites Wired, which slightly misrepresented the contents of the Army report, playing up the Twitter aspect when most of the report was actually about cell phones and GPS. Twitter plays even more prominently in the AFP version.

Terrorist 'tweets'? US Army warns of Twitter dangers
Totally unrelated to the content of this article....BUT...why can't AFP either 1) link to the document on the FAS site themselves or 2) at least link to the Wired "Danger Room" post that links to the document?!? If they can link to wired.com, then they should be able to link to any other thing on the web. Of course...they are not, apparently, able to link to Wired.com, beause when I click the link I just get an error message. So then the question becomes, why is it that the AFP has not figured out how hyperlinking works??
