Esta iniciativa surge como parte de los Proyectos de Educación de OpenOffice.org, cuyo principal objetivo es crear un puente entre OOo y el mundo de la Educación, asi como entrenar y reclutar nuevos desarrolladores.

El soporte y los recursos corren por parte de las asociacion francesa EducOOo.

Los cuales en conjunto con algunos profesores, vieron la necesidad de crear una suite ofimática dedicada a la educacion, principalmente de los niños de primer grado.

Así nació el proyecto OOo4Kids ("OpenOffice.orf for Kids"), el cual es una versión mas ligera de OpenOffice.org y con una interfaz mas llamativa.
Entre sus principales características están:

* Está dedicado a estudiantes entre 7 y 12 años
* Con adaptaciones específicas para el mundo de la educación
* Multiplataforma (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows)
* Multilingue

Todo el proyecto se hace con fines educativos, con la idea de contribuir y reintegrarlo al Proyecto OpenOffice.org
