Nuclear repository may not be needed | www.rgj.com | Reno Gazette-Journal
The Nevada Nuclear Projects Agency should be restructured. It should look for nuclear technology opportunities using Yucca Mountain for Nevada rather than be against Yucca. Nevada could benefit greatly from nuclear technology by allowing nuclear power plants using "reprocessing."

Patrick Moore: The case for more nuclear power in Texas | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Opinion: Viewpoints
A nuclear energy renaissance is in full swing in the Lone Star State. Luminant Generation recently filed a federal permit to build two new reactors at its Comanche Peak nuclear plant in Somervell County. That makes six new nuclear reactors pending statewide, which would more than double the state's production of electricity from virtually carbon-free nuclear power.

Britain urged to dump climate goals | Reuters
British climate and energy policy is incoherent and needs an overhaul, dumping carbon targets and building more coal and nuclear power stations to stop the lights going out, a pro-nuclear scientist said.
A report entitled "A Pragmatic Energy Policy for the UK", by Professor Ian Fells and Candida Whitmill, said renewables would not fill the impending energy gap so old nuclear and coal plants had to be kept going while new ones were built urgently.

Nuclear talk electrifying | coloradoan.com | The Coloradoan,
In a recent Soapbox, Lisa Olivas castigated Gov. Bill Ritter for saying that nuclear power is going to be part of our future, correctly deducing that if there is going to be nuclear power, there will need to be mining for uranium. So, should there be nuclear power and, if so, is it safe?
Currently, the United States derives 20 percent of its electricity generation from nuclear power, while all nonhydroelectric renewable sources, including solar and wind power, provide about 2.5 percent and coal provides about 50 percent.

New Statesman - How nuclear power can save the planet
Increased use of nuclear (an outright competitor to coal as a deliverer of baseload power) is essential to combat climate change
The location for this year's Camp for Climate Action - outside the Kingsnorth power station in Kent - was well chosen: it is here that E.ON wants to build the first new coal-fired plant in the UK in nearly 30 years. With coal the most global-warming-intensive fuel on the market, and six more coal plants in the pipeline if Kingsnorth gets the go-ahead, there is a clear line to be drawn in the sand.

Nuclear loan guarantees 'undersized': Goldman Sachs banker
At $18.5 billion, the US Department of Energy's loan guarantee program for new nuclear reactors is "undersized," John Gilbertson, a managing director at investment bank Goldman Sachs said Thursday. That would only be enough for about three new reactors, Gilbertson said at a Center for Strategic and International Studies meeting on the business case for nuclear power.

U.S. Nuclear Power is Stymied:
The United States has spent more than $6 billion on the Yucca Mountain repository, and debate still rages over when — or whether — it will open. In contrast, Canada is close to settling on a course for burying its nuclear waste that promises none of the divisiveness that the Yucca Mountain project has spawned.

Don’t Be Fooled Again by the Anti-Nuclear Crowd » The Foundry
A few alleged design hiccups and supposed cost increases in Westinghouse’s new AP1000 nuclear reactor have so-called public interest groups calling for the reactor to be taken off the table. Claiming that escalating costs and half-baked design ideas will result in a failure to build the reactors, environmental group Friends of the Earth are calling for state regulatory agencies to reverse an earlier decision that approved the project.

Nuclear power has a major advantage over fossil fuel power sources when it comes to global warming. Generating power from nuclear fuel does not produce any carbon dioxide. Shouldn’t we be retiring our coal-fired power plants and replacing them with nuclear plants?
