  • “I would expect that next year, people will share twice as much information as they share this year, and next year, they will be sharing twice as much as they did the year before,” he said. “That means that people are using Facebook, and the applications and the ecosystem, more and more.”
  • Call it Zuckerberg’s Law.

CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive - McCain, Obama use Facebook to encourage voter registration « - Blogs from CNN.com

  • The camps’ two new applications are only the latest in increasing efforts by both sides to utilize Facebook to spread their message and galvanize their supporters. Thursday, the McCain camp also premiered a Facebook application dedicated to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain’s popular running mate. The new Palin application appears to function as a link from a user’s profile to Palin’s Facebook fan page. The McCain camp also recently launched “McCain Live,” an application which allows supporters to watch live, streaming video of McCain-Palin campaign events from their Facebook profiles.
  • Having already established a substantial presence on the social networking site through its original application, the Obama campaign now appears to be trying to leverage its base of more than a million supporters on Facebook into grassroots foot soldiers. Since Obama formally accepted the Democratic nomination, his campaign has encouraged supporters on Facebook to sign-up for a number of affinity fan pages targeted to women; veterans; gays/lesbians; various ethnic/racial groups and to supporters interested in spreading the messages of the “Obama Action Wire,” the campaign’s fact-checking operation. In addition, the Obama campaign is also encourage supporters to establish connections on Facebook to fan pages the campaign has established for various states.

Fastest Growing Search Engines? Facebook and MySpace

  • According to this July’s comscore data the fastest growing locations for search are Facebook and MySpace. MySpace had 539 million searches and Facebook had 173 million and posted 20 and 10 percent growth, respectively. My guess is that these searches are only domestic searches which would account for the large difference. Whatever the case is these numbers are far below Google’s search volume which fell just under 10 billion searches for the month with 4 percent monthly growth.

Facebook Technology Infrastructure Needs Constant Care - CIO.com - Business Technology Leadership

  • Jonathan Heiliger: A couple good reasons and not so good reasons. We’re a technology company and we like to write software. But really, these tools are integrated with the Facebook interface, so it makes it that much easier for employees to use. One thing I’ve seen at a lot of other companies is they have a pea soup style—lots of tools and Web forms and e-mail in-boxes. It’s difficult for an employee to know, if they have an HR question, do I e-mail or walk over? Do I have to fill out a comment form? For us, it’s all Facebook. Employees use Facebook every day. They don’t have to launch a browser window to go to different URLs to communicate.

Facebook Technology Infrastructure Needs Constant Care - CIO.com - Business Technology Leadership

  • Jonathan Heiliger: We’re constantly looking at the lines. It’s not static at Facebook. Most IT organizations love to control change. I threw that out when I came. We’re not going to try to control change, but speed it up. We trained people to be pushers. We do a major release once a week and minor releases every few days. Recently, we did some underlying changes— to photo gallery layout, for example, or starting using more Ajax calls on the site so the page refreshes are more seamless.

Why Facebook Connect Matters & Why It Will Win - GigaOM

  • Each service adds a few more data points about you inside the Facebook brain, which is quite aware of your activities inside the Facebook ecosystem. The brain can then crunch all that information and build a fairly accurate image of who you are, what you like and what might interest you. With all that information at its disposal, Facebook can build a fairly large cash register.

powering facebook's proverbial brain

  • The race is on to own certain classes of core data: location, identity, calendaring of public events, product identifiers and namespaces. In many cases… the winner will be the company that first reaches critical mass via user aggregation, and turns that aggregated data into a system service.”
